Speaker 3:I'm.
Speaker 2:Grayson.
Speaker 1:And I'm Jaden and we're talking all things. South River High School sports Octalk is brought to you in conjunction with the Athletic Department at South River High School. Merrick Creative, your end-to-end creative agency dedicated to amplifying brands' authenticity through branding, marketing and public relations. Chad's Barbecue and Maryland Remodeling Expert. All right, this is the first episode with the three of us back.
Speaker 3:Yeah, it feels good to be back.
Speaker 1:How are you doing, Jaden?
Speaker 2:Feeling good. Feeling good.
Speaker 1:Yeah, How's this first week of school going for you guys?
Speaker 3:I mean first few weeks, yeah this first few weeks Just going through the motions? What do you mean going through the motions? Just showing up to class doing what I'm told?
Speaker 1:I need to ask you guys about something, though what's up with this half-day thing? Is Jayden on a half-day thing too?
Speaker 2:Oh yes.
Speaker 1:I never had half-days.
Speaker 3:These didn't exist. Well, I mean, maybe your generation wasn't as smart as ours, so we like this then, yeah, I'm a big fan, all right.
Speaker 1:We're also joined today by we got Kira, we got Sidney and we got my man Jay.
Speaker 4:I haven't talked to Jay in a while. I know Good to be here Jay was on our football team for years. Yeah, People forget about that. I was a real talent, don't forget about me.
Speaker 1:Well, I don't forget about one thing though. You know what?
Speaker 2:I'm going to talk about.
Speaker 3:I do. What are you talking?
Speaker 1:about the catch.
Speaker 4:The drop, the drop, the drop.
Speaker 1:But we won't get into the drop.
Speaker 4:Let's leave it off. Let's leave it off, it costs the champion.
Speaker 1:But I'm not going to bring it up. I'm not going to bring it up. All right, we're going to get all into this. In a' soccer. We're at 1-3-1. We dropped games in the past week to Crofton, Leonardtown and Annapolis.
Speaker 4:What's going on? I'll start with Crofton. It was a solid game. We just really can't create like we used to, but with that comes injuries. I've been out with a concussion. We got our captain, Patrick Mitchell. He's got an issue with his hip flexor and we got another captain who has an issue with his Achilles. That's Luis Parada. All great players, but we've just been struggling early.
Speaker 1:You had a concussion.
Speaker 4:Yeah, You're back. I come back on Monday. You come back on Monday, but we're more. I mean nothing we can do about it now. All we're doing is going back to working.
Speaker 1:All right, so we've got a game Thursday yes sir Against Severna Park Big game. I don't like Severna Park.
Speaker 3:No one knows man everyone.
Speaker 1:And then next Wednesday Chesapeake-Science Point. You'll be back for that game. Yes, sir.
Speaker 4:That's my first game back.
Speaker 1:All right, here's what Coach Marlin said. He echoed what you said, batt, but there's still plenty of season to left to turn things around. Yeah, to say the least, that's what we've got to do. The girls they're at 4-1. Yeah, yeah, they had a loss to Crofton and a win over Annapolis last week. They got upcoming games, same as you guys. Thursday it's Wissapurn Park and then next Wednesday Chesapeake Science Park. What?
Speaker 4:do you know about the girls' team? They also had a rough start this preseason, but I think they also had some tough matchups and, even as Crofton, that game ended 1-0, and they played really well. I think they deserve that win, yeah.
Speaker 1:They could have been undefeated.
Speaker 4:Yeah, I mean they have a chance to. That could be their only loss this year, so Verna Park's a tough game, but after that I think they got a good chance.
Speaker 1:So the girls making a run here, Girls making a run here.
Speaker 4:Yeah, and they only have three seniors this year, so next year they got even more potential.
Speaker 1:Oh, I like it. All right. Our field hockey team three and three. They lost two tight ones last week to Winston Churchill and Saverna Park. What do you know? What do we know about the girls' field hockey team?
Speaker 5:They have a good set of juniors.
Speaker 1:They got some good juniors. I think they have like three or four seniors, maybe Three or four seniors maybe. Three or four seniors. I've been watching the JV games.
Speaker 5:Their goalie's very good.
Speaker 3:Goalie's very good. How's the JV team looking?
Speaker 1:JV looks pretty good. They lost the tough ones to Zaverna Park yesterday, but they're doing okay, we'll be all right, don't worry about it.
Speaker 3:I'm not worried, you're all good.
Speaker 1:We don't have any other games this week, but Do you want to talk to me? No, we're at volleyball. Oh, volleyball.
Speaker 5:Volleyball. I don't know much about it. We got a lot of seniors this year A lot.
Speaker 3:We're filled with seniors, Filled with seniors. This is supposed to be, hypothetically, this is our year. This is our year.
Speaker 5:I think I don't know how many people start, but a good portion of them are seniors players.
Speaker 1:Alright, we gotta bring them back.
Speaker 5:We've been since freshman year.
Speaker 1:And then golf and track. We know we have a golf team.
Speaker 5:We know we have a track team. They're actually doing good.
Speaker 1:We're gonna say they're doing good. We need some more updates. Alright, now we're talking football. We sit at 2-0, with a big home opener win versus Hereford. Is that what you're saying? 49-14. Ben Raines threw for 269 yards and three touchdowns on 16 passes and then we got to give it up. For you, jaden, you were the Military Bowl Touchdown Club High School Football Player of the Week. That's a mouthful. You had three caught passes for 151 yards. Two touchdowns returned to kickoff for 50 yards. You also returned a punt for 79 yards. Yeah, I like it. Well done.
Speaker 2:Tell us a little bit about some insight give us some insight um, I mean everybody, everybody knew what we're getting into this year. Lots of people coming back shout out xander zach, greg ben, uh, probably forgetting, oh no one. Hookers playing, trends, trent's playing, blue's playing. We knew what we were ready to get into this year. I think we're going to beat it. Take it one day at a time, though this Friday. Yeah, Seed's a good team. Seed's a good team, so we'll see how that goes Friday, but I like our odds.
Speaker 1:I think we're on track for my prediction. Of my prediction I said the most points scored ever by a South River high school football team. So far, so good, I think.
Speaker 2:Yeah, we're going to shatter that.
Speaker 3:I like the confidence.
Speaker 1:I like the confidence too. Alright, now I want to hear from you. Guys are called. This is the collective group that is the student section leaders.
Speaker 5:What does that mean?
Speaker 4:Get the crowd going. It's our job, it's your job. Every time there's a flag, you can't do that. For example, or every third down.
Speaker 1:You just gotta be electric and Jaden, did you hear them at the last game?
Speaker 2:Oh, I heard them loud and clear.
Speaker 3:I thought you guys did a good job. We were told we did good. I think we can do better, of course. I think we can be ten times louder.
Speaker 2:I'm working on the.
Speaker 3:FSU chant it's coming. I might save it for the playoffs.
Speaker 1:I think we need more of a Seahawk or something we can switch it up, of course.
Speaker 3:Maybe we could get a 12th man going with Seahawks. You know Seattle. Yeah, Could do something there, yeah.
Speaker 1:Now let me ask you this If one of you had to be the Seahawk, who would it be?
Speaker 5:It's me, cindy, 100% Cindy, it's you yeah.
Speaker 1:I think you need to do it. One game.
Speaker 5:I agree, pull up in the Seahawks One game. Pull up in the.
Speaker 1:Seahawks One game Pull up in it. Should I? Yeah, why not? That would be funny. People would get so excited to see the Seahawks come running, like you just come running out of nowhere the whole game in that suit.
Speaker 5:No, no, you don't have to do the whole game, oh.
Speaker 1:I would say like, maybe like now midway through the third quarter, oh wow.
Speaker 5:Third quarter them.
Speaker 1:You come out midway through the third quarter.
Speaker 3:You don't tell anyone you're going to do this. Should I run the field? Well, we are talking about it on a podcast.
Speaker 1:So people who are in the know, or the people listening, I'll do it this Friday, but I think around maybe two minutes into the third quarter you sneak away.
Speaker 3:We got to be up there, right we're going to be up, we could lead our company. According to James, we'll be.
Speaker 1:we're going to be up by like 50 at this point. So I think you go away and then, middle of the third, you just come running out of nowhere.
Speaker 5:I think we need some really good halftime shows too.
Speaker 1:Halftime shows.
Speaker 5:We're kicking. We're kicking this week.
Speaker 1:Hopefully we win that $100.
Speaker 5:Yeah, we're both kicking.
Speaker 1:I want to hear more about this. How long is the field goal at halftime?
Speaker 5:I think it's 25 yards.
Speaker 3:That's a cheap shot.
Speaker 5:We do that Cheap shot. We got easy.
Speaker 1:We had a winner last week, right.
Speaker 4:Yeah, we did. I think it was Luke. Yeah, shout out, luke.
Speaker 5:What do you mean? Like he made it.
Speaker 4:He made it. He got 100 bucks. Hopefully they split it. Wait, 100 bucks for the school or for himself, for himself, wait. So you two are doing this this week.
Speaker 5:Yeah, we should probably practice.
Speaker 1:I'm trying to win the 100 bucks An idea.
Speaker 5:Thank you.
Speaker 1:What if you make it in the Seahawk costume?
Speaker 5:I don't think I'd be able to look at it, maybe up the money.
Speaker 3:It really depends on how well you can see out of that costume. Have you ever worn the head? It depends on how well you can see out of that costume.
Speaker 5:Yeah, I don't think you can have you ever worn the head.
Speaker 4:No, it's just like mesh, you can see out of it yeah, I mean yeah, what about the foot?
Speaker 1:All right Now the foot could be good. Take off the foot. Maybe you take the foot off.
Speaker 4:Wow, I don't know it's just a thought this week oh yeah, they did, they were on it.
Speaker 5:I was actually impressed with them.
Speaker 1:And you guys did a good job. We did a cheer for them, we did a cheer for them too.
Speaker 4:It was synced really well. Yeah, I noticed that they had shout-out band. Shout-out band.
Speaker 5:Yeah, band and the cheerleaders, Cheerleaders were good Shout-out Carly Mila a dice and it involves the student section, which was nice.
Speaker 1:Alright, tell me more about this. I saw a giant dice, but I didn't know what was going on.
Speaker 5:Depending on which number you rolled. They do like a stunt or like tumbling Like a basket. I don't know what any of that means.
Speaker 1:You're determining what they're doing based on rolling the dice.
Speaker 5:Yeah, and like we throw it to the student section and they just like hit it back and forth.
Speaker 1:I like it I.
Speaker 5:I think we did good.
Speaker 3:I think you guys did a tremendous job. Our chances were good. We will do better.
Speaker 1:I agree.
Speaker 3:Sky's the limit.
Speaker 1:Now, Jaden, what is your opinion here? What else could they provide to score even more points for this team?
Speaker 2:Man, they did great. I feel like that student section last week was better than any student section we had last year.
Speaker 5:I agree Wow.
Speaker 2:Honestly like Hoko was pretty good last year, but I think last Friday topped Hoko's. I can't wait to see what happens this week.
Speaker 3:We set the bar.
Speaker 2:Set a high bar.
Speaker 1:And we'll be right back.
Speaker 2:Welcome to Merrick Studios, where stories take the mic and culture comes alive.
Speaker 1:We're not just a network, we're a family, bringing you smart, soulful, unfiltered conversations.
Speaker 4:And this season we're bringing the heat With our biggest lineup yet. Whatever you're into, music sports business, we got you covered Merrick Studios, where the conversation starts.
Speaker 1:And keeps going. Check out our full lineup, including Unglossy, with Bun B, Jeffrey Sledge and myself, Tom Franck. And now back to our show. All right, so this week we got a game. Friday at 6 o'clock, we play the Seeds School of Merit. Yeah.
Speaker 3:I haven't even heard of them. Do we know anything about them?
Speaker 1:Jaden. I can tell you a couple quick facts. Before Jaden, though, okay.
Speaker 2:I know they're from.
Speaker 1:Baltimore, okay, and I know their mascot is the Sabres.
Speaker 5:No, we got to make a poster regarding that Savers.
Speaker 1:remember that. All right, jay, now we got some more knowledge.
Speaker 2:I mean, they went to the state semifinals last year. They are 1A but they get to handpick their kids because they're a charter school, so they kind of just it's kind of like the private school but in the public. But yeah, they got a really good kicker, they got an athletic quarterback that can throw the ball and they have a really good running back. We're going to be prepared, of course, but it's not some easy game.
Speaker 1:What does the student section leaders have planned for this game?
Speaker 5:Well, we're layout, or like Hawaiian tropical team. It's also Libby's. Oh yeah, it's Laysomoke for Libby. Oh yeah, it's.
Speaker 1:Lace and Mug for Libby. Oh, Lace and Mug for Libby. I like Lace and Mug.
Speaker 5:It's their week thing. So I think, are the football players doing yellow laces?
Speaker 2:Jaden, we're doing like a yellow symbol. We're doing a yellow little symbol on the back of our helmets.
Speaker 3:Okay.
Speaker 2:Cool yeah.
Speaker 1:And I think it's youth cheer this week, so the whole track is going to be filled with cheer oh gosh. Oh wow, this is even better for the Seahawk running out.
Speaker 5:Yeah.
Speaker 1:Oh, you have to do it now. I didn't even think of this.
Speaker 5:There's going to be tons of little girls on the track.
Speaker 1:They're going to love it.
Speaker 5:I was talking to Klingle. Yeah, All right, Klingle if you're listening.
Speaker 1:We got our.
Speaker 3:Seahawk, make it happen.
Speaker 5:Yeah, it's more. I think Kira should do it actually.
Speaker 1:I think you'll be perfect. I think you'll be perfect, all right, so this week is Hawaiian.
Speaker 5:Yes.
Speaker 1:All right, I like that. Have you guys got your Hawaiian gear? Of course, I got a good Hawaiian shirt for you. Oh perfect and it has, I think, little footballs on it.
Speaker 3:Oh really, why do you have that why?
Speaker 1:do you have that?
Speaker 5:I have it for Snapdragon Apples. Which did Gray ever tell you that he was the mascot at a Buffalo?
Speaker 1:Bills game. Oh, he should be the mascot Are you serious?
Speaker 5:He should be the mascot.
Speaker 1:He was a dragon at the Buffalo Bills New York Giants preseason game this past month.
Speaker 3:What this year, this year?
Speaker 5:You didn't tell anybody about that A couple weeks ago actually. Oh, tell anybody about that A couple weeks ago actually. Oh, a couple weeks A couple weeks ago.
Speaker 1:Yeah, we'll circulate photos.
Speaker 5:You should be the mascot.
Speaker 1:He does have some experience with it. All right, give us a rundown after this game. You got Beings the rest of the year.
Speaker 5:Yes. They have them all worked out.
Speaker 1:Let's hear them.
Speaker 5:Okay, so for the next game, it's Away. I'm not sure who we played, but Urbana.
Speaker 1:Urbana.
Speaker 5:Yeah, it's on Thursday though.
Speaker 1:Ooh, it's a Thursday night game. Yeah, ooh, primetime.
Speaker 5:It's country-themed Country.
Speaker 1:Country.
Speaker 5:Mm-hmm, and then our next game is Homecoming.
Speaker 1:So it's the 3rd of October? Yeah, it's a week and a half, two weeks away. Do you have a theme for?
Speaker 5:homecoming. Yeah, it's like rave neon out and then they play Crofton October 10th, so it's also cancer awareness month, so we chose to do Pink Out for it. I already bought my ticket for that game and that's a home game right it's a home game no, it's a away game. Hopefully you got the ticket to the right place and that's a home game, right? It's a home game.
Speaker 1:No, it's a away game. Oh, shoot, it's a way, but it's supposed to be a good game. Hopefully you got the ticket to the right place.
Speaker 5:I definitely got a Crofton ticket, but I'm hoping it's whatever. And then the 17th of October, it's our senior night. Everybody should be there. We got what? 35 seniors I thought it was 35, 32 start.
Speaker 1:How many seniors do we have Jade?
Speaker 2:We have 31 on the football team, then we have two managers and then the senior squad as well. Oh wow. A lot of seniors, yeah, so that's blackout, of course, we play.
Speaker 5:Southern, southern. Yeah, it's a good game, it's going to be a good game.
Speaker 3:It's a home game too right, yeah, obviously yeah, jersey Shore.
Speaker 5:Have you ever seen Cheetah Old Town?
Speaker 1:Oh, okay, I don't know if I can help you with that. I think everybody's going to need to go to.
Speaker 5:Chesapeake. I was the only student there last year. Everybody's got to go. That was a great game too. We beat them on their homecoming night.
Speaker 1:And at this point, according to Jaden, you're what like?
Speaker 2:7-0, 6-0 at this point Exactly yeah, lots of belt being handed out.
Speaker 5:Evan Pax had like 20 plus tackles against Chesapeake last year as well.
Speaker 2:He did last game too. Yeah, oh, wow.
Speaker 5:Last game, really.
Speaker 2:Shout out, pax.
Speaker 1:Shout out Pax and.
Speaker 2:I think they might have changed it to the day before.
Speaker 5:Yeah, I heard about that too.
Speaker 1:So the last game of the year is not on Halloween anymore, I guess not. No trick-or-treating.
Speaker 5:That's a long weekend, though that's nice. It's on a Friday, have a whole weekend for ourselves.
Speaker 1:All right, so a lot planned. Big game this Friday. What are you telling all the students? To make sure, even if they've never come to another football game, they have to come tonight.
Speaker 5:Oh, yes, or Friday night right.
Speaker 1:What are you telling everybody? You need everybody there because you've got to keep it going up.
Speaker 5:Yeah, we'll really have two more home games after that? I think Not a lot.
Speaker 1:The Seahawks there's a potential Seahawks running. Have some pride in.
Speaker 3:It Show potential Seahawks have some pride in it Show up, show pride.
Speaker 4:It's your school.
Speaker 5:Show love I think we'll French the Seahawks. It's fun. Yeah, we should make it on the class.
Speaker 1:All right, hawaiian night, hawaiian night.
Speaker 5:Get out there, six o'clock, be there.
Speaker 1:All right, Jayden. Any other exciting facts for this game? The Maryland Seed School. Maryland seed school A seed school in Maryland.
Speaker 2:I mean, I think it's going to be a great game. I think that they're a well-coached team.
Speaker 1:Got good players, so it gives us a little challenge All right, I like it. It's my home. All right, ray, you got any bonus content for us this?
Speaker 3:week. I feel like it's only right we have to talk about the Chiefs are having two.
Speaker 1:Which I predicted you called it.
Speaker 3:But I think that game also. I think Kelsey catches that touchdown. It's not very close, Could have Right. Do we know who they play this week?
Speaker 5:I don't know, but Kelsey's on his high horse because he just got engaged. He just got engaged Taylor Swift, taylor Swift and him.
Speaker 4:Not on his high horse After week one knocked his teammate out. Are we serious? He did run into him, he's out for at least a couple games.
Speaker 1:His teammate. Yeah, I mean he is engaged that Taylor's with. I mean that's cool, you're set for life, whatever.
Speaker 4:He is engaged that Taylor's with. I mean that's cool. Yeah, you're set for life.
Speaker 1:Whatever I'm worried about our commanders.
Speaker 3:I'm very worried about JD5.
Speaker 1:I'm worried about our commanders? I don't know.
Speaker 3:I'm thinking the worst. How are we feeling about our Ravens Jada and Jay?
Speaker 4:Absolutely amazing.
Speaker 3:Amazing.
Speaker 4:Amazing yeah.
Speaker 2:I mean that first game's tough Take down the chamber. That's just our team. We're out of the loose now than in the playoffs, like last year. So if that's what we have to do to win in the postseason, then I'm fine with that.
Speaker 4:I agree. Couldn't agree more.
Speaker 3:Couldn't agree more either.
Speaker 4:Bill's game was tough, but it happened. The defense knows what they did wrong. Marlon Humphrey.
Speaker 2:Captain.
Speaker 3:Is it a Harbaugh problem? Does Harbaugh need to be fired?
Speaker 2:I don't know, it's questionable.
Speaker 4:He makes a lot of questionable decisions.
Speaker 3:I think just having Lamar is really saving him.
Speaker 4:You play against a good Buffalo Bills defense and you're averaging 9.5 yards per attempt, Lamar didn't do anything wrong.
Speaker 3:No, not at all.
Speaker 4:No one's pointing any fingers at Lamar. They're averaging almost 10 yards a play and they have fourth and third to ice the game and they decide to punt it. It's ridiculous to me, I agree, I think you should have gone.
Speaker 3:End the game.
Speaker 4:One of the most productive offenses in the league. Yeah, I agree, we don't want to take the chance.
Speaker 3:I don't know. Wow. Any words on your commanders? I'm worried.
Speaker 1:Why are you? Don't be so worried, I'm worried. Lots of injuries. We didn't have any injuries last year.
Speaker 3:We've gone through two weeks. It's all about peaking right time.
Speaker 1:I'm worried, I'm worried, I have more confidence in the South River Seahawks going undefeated than the commanders getting into the playoffs right now. Stop it. That's how I feel I got a lot more than the Commanders getting into the playoffs right now. Stop it. That's how I feel. Stop it. That's how I feel I got a lot more confidence in Jaden than I do In the other Jaden In the other Jaden right now.
Speaker 3:I appreciate that. No problem, that's high praise Jaden.
Speaker 2:It is. I know I'm going to take that Appreciate it All right.
Speaker 1:Well folks, we, well folks. We got the. What do we call it again?
Speaker 5:I keep forgetting your name student section leaders student section leaders.
Speaker 1:I like it be out there looking for you guys. I want to see big cheering. I want to see the Seahawks, I want to see you guys make the field goal.
Speaker 5:Oh yes, I'm not doing that to the Seahawks. We'll both make it. We were the kickers for Powderpuff last year.
Speaker 3:Oh, you were. Well, it's different when you got some pressure on you that was pressuring enough. We'll see I don't think we ever kicked, though we didn't kick. Me and Jay will make sure it gets loud for it.
Speaker 5:I don't know if I want all that.
Speaker 1:I might come to the game just to see that now you should go to the game.
Speaker 5:Oh.
Speaker 1:And I'll be looking for the Seahawk.
Speaker 5:Do you think that thing smells? Oh, definitely.
Speaker 4:Back in the closet 100%. How are they going to clean that?
Speaker 5:I know Will French was the one that.
Speaker 1:Just bring some like the spray, Spray it all out you just got to eat it I would use like that
Speaker 5:soccer spray that you put in the cleats. What about soccer spray that you put in the cleats?
Speaker 1:It's going to smell worse than cleats. It's going to smell terrible.
Speaker 4:But it's going to be great. It's going to be a blast. It's going to be good. You hear the crowd pop when you run out there.
Speaker 1:It's going to be good, I feel a big week for the. Seahawks this week. I agree A big week. I'm predicting a big score. I think we're going.
Speaker 3:Wow, it's a bold statement, but you heard it here first. You heard it here first.
