All right, welcome back to the Hawk Nation. I'm Tom Frank.
Speaker 2:I'm Grayson Frank and I'm G McDuffie.
Speaker 1:And this is Hawk Talk and we are talking all things. South River High School sports.
Speaker 3:Hawk Talk is brought to you in conjunction with the Athletic Department at South River High School. Merritt Creative your end-to-end creative agency dedicated to amplifying brands' authenticity through branding, marketing and public relations.
Speaker 1:Chad's Barbecue and Maryland Remodeling Expert through branding, marketing and public relations, chad's barbecue and Maryland remodeling expert Fellas. We got a lot going on in sports right now, but I think we got to start with what's right in front, right in our backyard right, right in the dress, out the river.
Speaker 1:Yeah, let's run down our spring sports scores, records, upcoming games. We're going to start with baseball. Baseball and softball. All right, Our varsity baseball and softball teams both sit with a nine and five record, with five games remaining on their schedule. They got Old Mill at home tonight. That's Friday night, April what is it? April 25th? Yep, and we were on the road Monday at Saverna Park, back at home, Wednesday versus Annapolis and Friday versus Severn Run. That's both our baseball and softball teams, both at nine and five. What do you know? What are you hearing?
Speaker 2:You know I heard my guy Preston man. He's a great pitcher. You know I've been hearing a lot of buzz about him. You know my guy Finn, a little biased. How's Finn doing this year? He's doing good Playing. First I watched a little bit of the crossing game. It went pretty well. I think we lost, but it was still a fun game to watch Deshaun Branson outfield doing what he do. He's committed to the hood Ball player, great guy. And then Nolan Hooker I feel like the star of the show. Yeah, just, he's one of the ones. He's good, real good. He's good, yes, All All right.
Speaker 1:we got to get some wins here in the last five Got to go on a stretch, got to go on a stretch. The JV baseball team is 6-9, and the JV softball team is sitting at 3-9. All right, we got our tennis team. Our tennis is 8-1.
Speaker 1:Oh wow, 8-1. They're on the road today. Friday, april 25th, for Saverna Park. Got to beat Saverna Park Always. Friday, april 25th for Saverna Park. Got to beat Saverna Park Always. And then they'll be at home the rest of the way, with Annapolis on Monday, crofton on Tuesday and Severn Run on Wednesday. What's up.
Speaker 1:Nice, there we go. That's our tennis team, and now we got to talk about lacrosse here for a bit. All right, we got. Our girls are 6-3-1. They had a tough loss at Saverna Park on Wednesday night. Five to four Damn. They're at Southern tonight, then back at home on Tuesday versus Crofton and away on Wednesday versus Faulston and they end the season with Chesapeake next Friday May 2nd man the boys.
Speaker 1:We got to talk about the boys. They're seven and three after dropping the last three. All tight games, including a 7-5 loss to Saverna Park on Wednesday.
Speaker 2:Man, oh man. That just shows, though, when we're fully healthy, yeah, it's about to be great. So I was talking to the Saverna Park kid. He plays football, and he was like, well, we got to play all two more times, so y'all scared us the first time. But we'll probably get to see him in the county a little and we're definitely going to see him in the regional, so they know what's up.
Speaker 1:What's our deal with our injuries?
Speaker 2:Trevor's rehabbing fast. Yeah, he is.
Speaker 1:Is he going to be back?
Speaker 2:Hey man, I'm praying, See him back. Yeah, for sure, it's our guy.
Speaker 1:Can we still make a run? You're going to make a run, with or without him.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I feel like we have a great. I mean I feel like last game showed that we can compete. I mean Spur Park's probably the best 3A team in the state. I have to say Top 50 team in the country. So for some I mean we 7-5. And I talked to a couple players. We honestly did play great, honestly, down the stretch. So I feel like, you know, we did have the lead at one point, we did, we did. So I mean I feel like we can compete with anybody. It's just about closing Exactly.
Speaker 1:All right. Well, we got to go on a little bit of a run here. We got to get some confidence back.
Speaker 2:Amen, yes, sir.
Speaker 1:Like the girls, they'll be at Southern tonight. They'll be on the road at Crofton next Tuesday and back at home versus Northern on Wednesday and then finish the regular season next Friday, May 2nd versus Chesapeake.
Speaker 2:Yeah, we should win out. We should win out. Sure, we're going to win out. Yeah, we are. Yep, 100%.
Speaker 1:All right. By the way, the boys JV are at 7-3 as well, and the girls JV are at 3-4-1. Nice, all right, fellas, I know you're all geeked up about the caps, the NFL draft, the NBA playoffs. I turn the mic over to you.
Speaker 2:I think we've got to talk about the draft first. You want to go draft first? All right, we had a draft.
Speaker 1:We had the first round last night. Who?
Speaker 2:do we think? First off, who do you think is the biggest winner of the draft? That's an honest answer. I'm not even trying to be biased. The Ravens just got the dog at 20. That's it.
Speaker 1:Ravens got a good player. I kind of wanted him for the commanders.
Speaker 2:A ball player, I think the Jaguars man, I think moving up and getting Travis you know, your DB1 along with a wide receiver to pair with Brian Thomas Jr. I think they have potential there and it gives Travis Hunter. Like that, he doesn't have to come in and be Superman, superman exactly, he can play both sides of the ball, correct, but he doesn't have to be the number one object.
Speaker 1:Is he going to play both sides? Yeah, do you think he can actually do that in the NFL?
Speaker 2:Well, everybody said nobody's ever done it like him in college. I don't think anybody. You know like some players have played both sides and everything, but he did it every series productively, every game, every game on a winning team playing in top competition. I 100% think he can.
Speaker 3:I think, he can.
Speaker 2:I think it should be hard, because when you take yeah, I think you're going to play a team like the Dolphins and you've got to guard Tyreek Hill, and then you've got to get guarded by Jalen Ramsey, you play against the Ravens, you've got to go against either Bateman or Zay Flowers and you've got to get guarded by Marlon Humphrey. That's hard, but I feel like he's been doing this his whole life. Yeah.
Speaker 1:How about the Commanders? Do we like the Commanders back?
Speaker 2:Me. There were some players on the board that I thought we could have added defensively, but at the end of the day, I'm not mad that we are protecting our franchise quarterback. Neither am I, and I think we're building. I mean, we got both our tackles set now with Lermie Tunsell and Josh Connolly Jr. I think the future is very bright.
Speaker 1:What's going to happen tonight? We got second and third round action.
Speaker 2:We got to address Jackson Dart being picked first. We got to address Shador Sanders not being drafted in the first round. This is ridiculous.
Speaker 1:Wait, wait. I disagree with you. I don't know if this guy has it.
Speaker 2:Wow, what, what Was the actor? A quarterback in college football? He is, he's the most accurate in college football. He's been training with Tom Brady since he was in like ninth grade.
Speaker 1:He knows real Got a massive ego. A massive ego which I think is going to turn off teammates. It's more than just pure skill here.
Speaker 2:Bro, here's the thing, though it's NFL, everybody got ego. That's a good point. Everybody's always been that guy. You got it and you also need it. I mean he's no Sean and Blaine. I mean look who his dad is, though. Like that's how he has the Blaine. He had like a 50-pound chain on last night. You know he had a whole party and stuff. So I mean Shiloh's not getting drafted. I don't know why people think that, but anyways, he. I feel like he has so much potential and he's just ready. I feel like I don't know, especially like Jackson Dardenne pick was cool at nine, but who was it that Steelers had him on the board and they had Mason Rudolph as their quarterback and they still didn't take him? Like that's just disrespectful.
Speaker 1:Maybe there's something we don't know, maybe there's another quarterback they already have ready to come in.
Speaker 2:Apparently he only went on meetings with the top five picks. Like the places with top five picks, the other GMs, I trust Tomlin. I do, that's fine.
Speaker 1:Where's he going to go? Is he going to go to Cleveland, the first pick of the second round?
Speaker 2:That pick of the second round, all right.
Speaker 1:That pick will happen before this show comes out, so we'll know.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I think. Another thing in the draft that it really ruined my day, ruined my month, I would say actually, is the Giants got a future defensive player of the year in Abdul Carter.
Speaker 1:Yes, there's a lot of Penn State fans listening, so you don't like to see him go to the Giants.
Speaker 2:I hated it actually, and I think they kind of I don't know how to feel on Dart Dart. I think he I don't think Lane Kiffin has 100% prepared him for the NFL, but he definitely has the talent and the skills to do it. You see his call count. It's just a class clap. He's never had to. I mean, he's a five-star guy, he's a hooser. I feel like if you're even pitching the first round, you still always have potential. It's just are you going to reach it?
Speaker 1:I think he's like that guy that the Jets took a couple years ago. I think he's another Zach Wilson. I don't think we hear about him in the near future.
Speaker 2:That's not a crazy take. That is not a crazy take at all. It's not ridiculous. It's not ridiculous to say that.
Speaker 1:Not ridiculous. I appreciate that, fellas.
Speaker 2:I like trending. Mick Can't say it. Mick Millie, mick Millie. Yes, bro, that you'd be nice. 6'5". I think every team lost, skipping on Luther Burton. I think he's going to be the superstar receiver out of this draft.
Speaker 1:Will he stick around to pick 61 for the Canines?
Speaker 2:I'm praying, but I don't know. Also, another big guy that dropped was Will Johnson. Yeah, his knee. Someone brought his knee, Someone got his knee. Man yeah, he's had knee concerns, but I still view him as my cornerback one in this draft. He's supposed to be a top 10 pick.
Speaker 1:What else you got on the NFL draft, or shall we move to another subject?
Speaker 2:Well before we move, is there anyone? We're eyeing second round for our teams here? Bro Ravens are so stacked we just don't win Super Bowl, it's all in time Hardball. Honestly, I'm telling Adam Pierce right now I'm hoping we need to address an edge rusher in the second round. I trust AP, I'll trust with who he takes, but I think we do need to address an edge rusher.
Speaker 1:I got nothing more to say about that. Let's see how it plays out. I don't even know who's left on the board. I don't know. I don't know any of these guys. Now we're after the, we're out of the first round. Here's my prediction somehow we're trading with the Steelers and we're gonna get what.
Speaker 2:I think, I think that's my, that's my big thing, one dude I do want the Redskins to draft is um, he's coming out of Rice Gabe, gabe Taylor. I'd be interested Just to see.
Speaker 1:Oh, I like that too.
Speaker 2:Maybe he's got it.
Speaker 1:We got to move on to the Caps man. The Caps.
Speaker 2:Game three tonight C-A-P-S Caps. I mean, these games have been tight, I won't lie.
Speaker 1:We have been having fun.
Speaker 2:We found ways, been tight, I won't lie, but we've been having fun. We found ways to win, I think Ovi, even though he didn't score game two, his physical presence is definitely huge for the team Sets the tone.
Speaker 1:If you got put on skates and Ovi was coming at you, could you take the hit?
Speaker 2:I think, no, I don't think I could take that, absolutely not. He has no teeth too. Jesus Scary, he's a big dude, he's huge, he's like Michael Myers with a hockey mask on.
Speaker 1:He is Do the Caps sweep.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I think the Caps sweep. I think the first two games we kind of kept it closed. I think we blow them out. Game three oh, a blowout bit close.
Speaker 1:I think we blow them out. Game three oh a blowout.
Speaker 2:You're predicting a blowout for tonight. 4-0. 4-0. I like it 4-0.
Speaker 1:Alright, that's the collective team prediction for us. Shall we finish off with the NBA playoffs? I've been Larry O'Shree. Oh, I apologize.
Speaker 2:I'd like to. It's not talked about enough Logan Paulson. Yeah, Logan, if you're watching this shout out to you man Is his name Logan Paul. It's supposed to be that.
Speaker 1:No, that's the tight end. It's Logan Thompson Thompson.
Speaker 2:I, I, I I. Logan Thompson. He's been a stud, especially in game two. He made some crucial saves and the team needs him. He's a huge part of our success.
Speaker 1:All right, so caps, caps, caps, I'm ready for NBA playoffs. Oh yes, I'm into it.
Speaker 2:The playoffs this year have been great. This is going to be like 2016 playoffs. Yeah, I agree it's been a lot more chippy. I feel like this year there's been a lot more fights, arguments, chief shots. What series do we want to address first? I think the easiest one is the Thunder, because they're just going to win by 50 every game, because it's getting ridiculous.
Speaker 1:Well, I was a close one last night. They were down to 30.
Speaker 2:They were trying to give them the game and they still lost. They still lost. Do we think, if John Morant doesn't get hurt, though, do we think Memphis wins that game? Yeah, wins that game. Yeah, for sure. I think so too. He controls the pace of the whole game, I agree. I think it's a completely different. I mean really serious, if Ja doesn't hurt. I mean, being down 2-1 versus 3-0 is a huge difference, and I'm taking that.
Speaker 2:How bad has Ja hurt? It didn't look too bad. It didn't look too bad, and nothing came out yet. So yeah, nothing has come out.
Speaker 1:Alright, nothing came out yet. So, yeah, nothing has come out. All right, here we take them. I mean, that's easy, right, that's easy Find a move.
Speaker 2:Nuggets also last night, I think dude Kawhi and Harden. It's looking like an underrated duo right now because everybody thought they were just washed. It's so off. It's looking like 2018, 2019 again. Mm-hmm.
Speaker 1:Kill. It. Is Denver in trouble.
Speaker 2:I think Denver's in trouble. They're going to get loose.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I think they're going to lose too.
Speaker 2:They're going to get loose. I think the Clippers are going to sneak around here. I'm scared. As a Lakers fan, I'm scared, not going to walk.
Speaker 1:I'm taking the Clippers over the. Lakers all day, All right buddy LeBron, come on, he's done.
Speaker 2:He averages 25, 9, and 8.
Speaker 1:He's done. He should be thankful Luka's on that team with him.
Speaker 2:First team, all NBA. First team, all NBA.
Speaker 1:That's just because his name is LeBron James.
Speaker 2:LeBron's a goat Bye. That Lakers series is tight. I mean it's Ant-Man bro. You got Nasri dropping 25 a game. They're shooting 60. Jim McDaniels just came up 60% from three. Are we serious? What do I got Jimmy Finn out there? Where are we going? But I think I do think I still have Lakers in that series in six. I think first game. I hate to say it might have been a fluke they shot 60% from three. Yeah, should be off the bench with 25+. I think if Austin Reed plays his role well, has like 15, 17 a game doesn't overshoot. I think I like the Rockets versus Warriors, though that's a great series it is. That is. Butler being hurt really concerns me Will.
Speaker 1:Butler be back.
Speaker 2:I doubt it. That could look bad Now that tailbone. Are you like 30-something years old?
Speaker 1:Jimmy Buckets. He's one of my favorite players.
Speaker 2:It's all up to Curry now. Man Toys went all up to Curry. You know he's always there.
Speaker 1:All right, so Golden State's done, Golden State's done Rob.
Speaker 2:I'm not saying Golden State's done.
Speaker 1:I'm saying that they're done.
Speaker 2:The Ice King Assassin is on that team, but not done. I think they guys start playing Kaminga and more. I think Kaminga's going to get a lot more minutes. Now that Butler's there, he's going to be a crucial part in that series. I think they're done. Wow, that's bold, yeah.
Speaker 1:We're going young. It's going to be all the young guys, all the young teams are coming through, except for, I guess, the Clippers. You can't call them young, all right, how about in the East?
Speaker 2:I think me personally.
Speaker 1:The Cavs the.
Speaker 2:Cavs. The Cavs are 30. I'm still taking my Still taking Celtics.
Speaker 1:The Chavs to me just nah, they're too soft.
Speaker 2:I mean, you have the defensive player of the year though, Evan Mobley.
Speaker 1:I'm taking the Celtics.
Speaker 2:I still deep down. I still believe the Bucs are going to come back Down 2-0, I think Dame and Halliburton have been going at it. I think Dame gets the best of it. Is he back in game three? Dame is back. He played game two. He didn't play his greatest, but him and Halliburton were going at it. I think Dame's mad. I think Dame goes crazy.
Speaker 1:He thinks Milwaukee, milwaukee's going to bounce back.
Speaker 2:I think, yeah, if Dame gets mad, you don't want to get Giannis mad either, a Greek freak.
Speaker 1:He rings the Greek freak. How about the Knicks?
Speaker 2:I like the Knicks. I really like this series. That's the fun. It's been the most entertaining series for me. You got a young Pistons team led by Cade versus a, I would say, a stacked Knicks team with, I mean, brunson Bridges. That's ridiculous, yeah.
Speaker 1:I'm taking the Knicks.
Speaker 2:I'm taking the Knicks. I'm taking the Knicks. Give me the Knicks in seven. Yeah, I think it goes All right. I'll see you in seven. I'll see you in seven. I think it was seven as well.
Speaker 1:All right, what's your pick right now in the finals? The two teams.
Speaker 2:Celtics Thunder, just because I think.
Speaker 1:It's an easy, that's the easy. Pick it is.
Speaker 2:It's the boring pick. But Celtics, they're loaded man. Celtics are loaded. They've shown no signs of slowing down. And the Thunder? You could argue the exact same point. The Thunder, they might have the MVP I think it should be Jokic, yeah, but they do have a MVP caliber player, along with great coaching and just great role players. I think they're, I think they're going to cruise through the West. Yeah, don't say the cabs, I know, I was. Just I thought there was one seed. No, I missed it. I don't want to say the cabs, but either the cabs or Celtics. Okay, it depends, because, jason Tatum, you know what I'm saying A little injury going on. It didn't look bad, though it didn't look too bad, but we'll see. So give me one of those two teams. You already know who's on my list Coming up. You got Luka and LeBron. Luka and LeBron on the same team.
Speaker 1:I'm not sure they get out of the next round.
Speaker 2:I mean I'll tell you Lakers in five Everything is. Lakers in five. Everything is Lakers in five.
Speaker 1:I hate to agree with Gray, but I think I got to go with Celtics and the Thunder. I do think the Nets, who do have the MVP of the league on their team.
Speaker 2:So you think Shea's the clear-cut favorite.
Speaker 1:Clear-cut, wow Over Yachting. Best player on the best tee.
Speaker 2:Did you even know who SGA was until this year?
Speaker 1:He is Canadian, but I'm going to let that go.
Speaker 2:Yoke, it's 61 points triple-double. Yeah, he had averaging a two-fold double. He's actually ham, though I think he's at that point where it happens to all-stars that win MVPs. They win so much, people are getting tired of seeing them. Really, he should be going on his fifth MVP. But he's not going to get it because he's already won it too many times it happened to MJ, it happened to Kobe, it happened to Bron, it's going to happen to you, it happened to Shaq. It happened to Shaq too. He's got tired of him winning it.
Speaker 1:Yeah. Although Shaq yeah, but he was just too big. They didn't know what to do. Too dominant, too dominant.
Speaker 2:I agree. Do we have any sleeper teams coming out of the West? I mean, my sleeper team out of the East is the Knicks.
Speaker 1:personally, I'll take my sleeper team as the Clippers.
Speaker 2:Yeah, that was my Clippers too. I'll be different. Would you consider Rockets a sleeper team?
Speaker 1:They're a super young team even though they're the two seed. But I still can't believe they're the two seed.
Speaker 2:Yeah, what about the Pistons Out of the East, pistons out of the East?
Speaker 1:That would be something.
Speaker 2:It's not ridiculous.
Speaker 1:It's ridiculous.
Speaker 2:Say that I think Cade Cunningham he's the man. I think Johnson's perimeter defense as well is going to help them deepen the playoffs if they get there 100%.
Speaker 1:They got to wait their time. They're not there yet. Peter's Houston hey upcoming. We have a big lottery.
Speaker 2:I'm terrified for this lottery.
Speaker 1:When's the lottery? When's the actual lottery?
Speaker 2:I believe it's in May at some point.
Speaker 1:All right, so we're not there yet.
Speaker 2:Cooper, ace or Dillon, but I want Cooper, everybody wants him.
Speaker 1:Everyone wants him.
Speaker 2:We do have a 14% chance to get him, which it is tied for best, but I'm just nervous yeah.
Speaker 1:My big prediction we get Cooper and somehow we convince him to come out and come to South River. What? Just to talk, just to hang out? We're going to get him on his show.
Speaker 2:He's only like eight months older than me.
Speaker 1:He's eight months older than you. We'll get him on the show. We'll trick him into thinking this is a big deal and he's got to be on here 100%. There we go. All right, fellas, I don't want to hold you guys up too much. I to hold you guys up too much.
Speaker 2:I feel like you've got to get back to class. I mean, I could talk so much. We should do a 24-hour podcast, honestly.
Speaker 1:A 24-hour podcast. All right, Hot Talk Nation. We have a 24-hour podcast coming up. You subscribe to listen now Only $5.99.
