Hawk Talk

March Madness

Tom Frank, Mike Zivic, Grey Frank, Jayden McDuffie Season 3 Episode 71

In this episode of Hawk Talk, South River High School's girls basketball coach Mike Zivik shares the exhilarating story behind their state championship win, outlining a journey from a challenging 2-5 start to ultimate glory at the University of Maryland. The episode delves into the team's development over the season, highlighting the strategic coaching, mental resilience, and unwavering community support that fueled their success. Coach Zivik’s tactical use of the team’s depth to wear down opponents played a pivotal role, particularly in the championship game, where South River’s frequent rotation of players contrasted sharply with their opponent's reliance on a few key starters, setting the stage for a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback.

The championship's setting added an extraordinary dimension to the victory, as the team walked the same tunnels as Big Ten legends, buoyed by the vibrant support of five busloads of fans from their hometown and the local community cheering from The Turtle in Edgewater. Coach Zivik highlighted the psychological strength of the team, emphasizing their ability to stay positive and composed under pressure, which was crucial to their comeback and ultimate victory. This episode not only celebrates their tactical success but also paints a vivid picture of the emotional and community-driven aspects that contributed to their memorable championship run.

This episode also marks an exciting transition for Hawk Talk as host Tom Frank welcomes new co-hosts Grey Frank and Jaden McDuffie, who bring fresh energy and perspective to the show. Their enthusiastic participation in a March Madness draft competition adds a fun, interactive element that basketball fans will appreciate as they debate tournament predictions and strategies.

Speaker 1:

We've got a good one for you here today. We have the state championship winning coach, mike Zivik, on and we're going to hear all about the championship run. But first we got a fun announcement for the spring season. I'm going to have two co-hosts on the show here with me. They're going to have their own segment. They're going to try to incorporate, they're going to try to hang with me here. We'll see if they can. All right, we got welcome to Hawk Talk. We got Gray Frank and we got Jayden McDuffie. What's up, fellas? What's up? What's up? What's up? How we doing? You ready to do this? I'm ready, let's go, let's go. All right, we're going to. Team is coming off a championship season. How are you coach? You're still. Are you still on cloud nine, or what's going on?

Speaker 2:

Oh yeah, there's very few moments that could equate to what happened at lights. Yes, a hundred percent.

Speaker 1:

So let's go back to that for a minute. We had a. We had absolute craziness last Friday night at the University of Maryland. I mean, what a game Was it? Anything you expected?

Speaker 2:

About yes, yes and no. I actually thought they'd break a little sooner.

Speaker 1:

You thought the other team would break a little sooner.

Speaker 2:

Yes, I thought we'd wear them down. I give them credit that they last in three quarters.

Speaker 1:

Oh, I like the mentality. So take us through the whole day, like, take us through from like the beginning to the end. I mean everything from getting on the bus to showing up. I mean we had a crowd there like I've never seen before. Like, just take me through the visuals from the time you got on that bus until the time you got back on that bus.

Speaker 2:

Get on the bus. That's when the nerves started kicking in a little bit. I'm glad we got there early, we're able to watch a very good boys game and because the first game went to overtime, that game was pushed back. Just being there, like walking through the tunnels, like this is where players walk around. It's just, you know, you see these legends that have played in the Big Ten and they walk the same tunnels that you just walked.

Speaker 2:

So that was kind of cool and it actually kind of calmed me down. To be quite honest. Well, being there I saw a lot of familiar faces, a couple of coaches, ads that I know that came up to talk to me and congratulated me. So it definitely relaxed me virtually. I think it relaxed the kids. Now I knew once the game started it was going to be a different story, because then the lights come on and those nerves come right back up. But I mean, we just, you know, we had a game plan, our game plan, going in. I think I told you same game plan we had at first team indicator. Just wear them down. They have five really good starters and they didn't have much else and we their five starters played 30 minutes each.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, they did. They played a long game. They were noticeably worn down by the end of that game.

Speaker 2:

And we played. We had three kids in 20 minutes and everyone else was in the teams. So we had five kids that were in the team. And I'll tell you this much even some of our kids were worn down. I mean, it's very. Reagan asked me to come out of the game at one point, but she shouldn't hire him.

Speaker 1:

So can you imagine the other team? Yeah, yeah, what'd you guys think of this game?

Speaker 3:

uh, I mean personally, it was a great game came down the wire. Uh, just to see. You know, key, come in the clutch key came in the clutch.

Speaker 1:

That's d1 key. Yeah, d1 key, I like that yeah, that environment was crazy.

Speaker 2:

I wasn't there, I was on a visit, but then I was watching my phone, knew my mom we're in the mall. We got lost because we were so focused on the game. We found our car after the mall but we were so tuned into the game. The comeback was crazy. It was great for our community and you know, like you said before, like the fans, that was the other thing. Once we got going it was just over. The fans got into it and we brought a crowd that's big props to Klingle. He had five bosses come. I mean the whole community came out and supported. I know even back in Edgewater they were playing the game at the Turtle. So, like it was a pretty. Yeah, it was a pretty good deal.

Speaker 1:

I mean, who was at the Turtle? Everybody was there. Everywhere I looked, I saw everybody. It was amazing.

Speaker 2:

There were some other people that weren't able to make it. They watched a great game with the Turtle.

Speaker 1:

They did and it was a great game. I mean it was. I got a little nervous, I'll be honest with you, when they got up a little bit, but then kicking it into a whole other gear in the fourth quarter was just impressive.

Speaker 2:

Honestly, I was never nervous. I just Look at this guy, I believe. No, I was never nervous. I just Look at this guy. No, I believed what we were going to do was going to come to fruition. It just took a little longer than I thought.

Speaker 1:

That. It did that. It did I mean what Give me the? I mean how was that bus ride back?

Speaker 2:

Oh, that was. I mean, you know, I talked to a couple coaches that have won the state championship beforehand Brennan O'Connell, duke's guy, he coaches at Pikesville Girls and I coach at North Point and you know, I guess the thing, the common theme among all of them was enjoy it and do not make it too. Try not to make it too stressful. Because the one coach said after I won it it was more of a relief than happiness Because it was like this weight was taking off me, because I put this huge weight on my back and I couldn't, I didn't even enjoy it.

Speaker 1:

I can see that that's good advice. I didn't think about that.

Speaker 2:

I mean it is because you put so much focus and time into it. It's just like you want this to happen and you can't, and you don't even get to enjoy it. So, luckily, I talked to some people. I mean, we had set up, like they came out of the tunnel right at the end of the game when we knew, that's when we went back and talked because we knew that they were going to hand out trophies. So like we were definitely more prepared for like just the nuances of what, how the day was going to go about, than the other team was too that probably played a big difference.

Speaker 1:

Um, I do have to ask you the thing that I think most uh fans were wondering what, what, what, what was with the choice of uh sock color?

Speaker 2:

uh, I've been wearing, uh, I got my snack socks. I've been wearing them all year and I went with my favorite Sour Patch.

Speaker 1:

You had Sour Patch. I didn't realize they were Sour Patch candy socks. So where does the trophy go? Is the trophy still with you?

Speaker 2:

No, no, it's at school, it's sitting in the main office. We'll probably put it in the trophy case at some point.

Speaker 1:

You didn't bring it with you. You should have at least had it for a week or two.

Speaker 2:

No, no, no, it stays there. I didn't do anything, I just showed up these girls they wanted it.

Speaker 1:

They did want it, and that was awesome to see. So I hate to look forward. But the Divine Nine are gone.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, yeah, they're going to have some big shoes to fill. I definitely think we definitely have some capable kids. It's just going to come down to like, how do we gel together? Because we're a tight team. I think that played a difference. We never got down, even when we were losing. We never got down. We never got upset at ourselves when we made a mistake. We just played an X-play, an X-play, an X-play, and I think that really helped us. When the other team, when we started clawing back and getting closer and closer, you could see them get a little frustrated with each other. The kid made a bad pass, or missed a shot, or didn't play defense and that was never the case with us and or didn't play defense, and that was never the case with us, and I definitely think that played into it. So you know I've got my work cut out for me again and we'll have to form a cohesive unit and, you know, go out there and hopefully defend that title.

Speaker 1:

Well now, what are you going to do with your time? You got nothing to do after school every day.

Speaker 2:

No, that's not true. Now I'm helping coach track for my son's school, my son's dollar school. You're coaching track?

Speaker 1:

Yes, that should be interesting.

Speaker 2:

I mean, I was a runner so I did it. I mean there's two things you tell them to run and run faster. There's not much to it. Yeah, little technique, Little technique, Get off. Look, I do long distance. I do some field events. I did have to learn how to throw a shot put. I taught kids how to throw a shot put. That's about it.

Speaker 1:

That is about it. Now we're off to spring sports. We're going to miss basketball. Basketball was fun this year Girls team, boys team. I mean, I kind of think we're a basketball school. At this point Everybody says lacrosse. I don't know about that. I think we are a basketball school. Now lacrosse. You can prove me wrong. This year we're going to see it.

Speaker 2:

We're going to. I mean basketball, you know, I think both teams are going to be stacked pretty good next year. Football team's looking pretty good. I mean we got a lot the school's definitely there's a good group of athletes in it, that's for sure.

Speaker 1:

So what do you? What do you tell? What's your? What's your last statement here to the fans, to the all the players that you're going to be coming up next year, you're going to have a good program here for a number of years. What do you tell them? They get fired up. I mean, you are now a state championship winning coach.

Speaker 2:

Nah, I'm still the same person I was before that game, and you know, just to the fans, thank you. I mean, the six men really helped, that's for sure. Our bench, our fans, everyone. They gave us that energy to get through that fourth quarter, that's for sure. And to the kids coming up, let's get to work.

Speaker 1:

I mean, I already see some of these kids in the gym. We're already starting up. I know I like that. I like that. I like it too. What do you guys think? Any, too. What do you guys think? Any other questions do you have? I mean this you guys are in a new situation. You're co-hosts of hawk talk and you got a teacher and a coach that basically has to answer any question you give him hey, these are big shoes to fill.

Speaker 3:

Let's go, fellas just off the top of my head yeah yeah, um, would you say the opposing crowd at all was a factor. I mean they definitely they were loud.

Speaker 1:

They were loud.

Speaker 2:

No, no, they were loud Like at the beginning of the game. I was like holy crap.

Speaker 1:

I'm like they're yelling Our fans are yelling back and forth.

Speaker 2:

I'm like it was a great atmosphere. I loved it. It was a college atmosphere, a hundred percent. If it was like at, let's just say, towson, it would have been, you know, like, because we didn't have the upper bowl.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I'll tell you what I saw. The only the only thing that they outdid us in, in my opinion, is their crowd was a little bit more coordinated. They they had, they had a dedicated hype man. Who who is who is telling them what, what things to do we need. I think, if we go back to a state championship, we need a dedicated hype man. You guys need to work on that next year.

Speaker 2:

Hey, I'm going to tell you guys this too I think this is where we need to like kind of we're having this success. We need to like harness this. It's one of the things that I've always been not down on, like just kind of frustrated with our school, like the school spirit. I think we can have more. When I played back in high school, like you couldn't get into the gym, it was, I mean, now, granted, it was a smaller gym and a smaller school, but like you couldn't get in. It was, you know, kind of like playing at St Mary's every year, yeah, and people were just coming out, coming out, kind of like playing at St Mary's every year, people were just coming out, coming out. We only had 300 kids in the school, so we're a small school, but I mean, yeah, I want to harness this. Get the people out for football, field hockey, soccer, let's go. Let's get people out, like get involved in the school. I think it will help out everything.

Speaker 1:

I agree, love the sound of that Love, the sound of that Love, the sound of it.

Speaker 2:

Did you have a question, jay? Yeah, I have a question. I have a question. So we went down to where, south Carolina Yep, y'all played some tough teams. How do you think those games really helped y'all push for the state run? You know what? At one point we're 2-5. That's right. Think about that. Think about that. We're 2-5, and we're getting beat up, but we're losing games by 3-5 points. We just couldn't close it out and it was getting in our kids' heads. I thought At that point I was like we just need something positive, just something positive. And we got the last one down there and then we came back and then we got Ann Atlas and started rolling and I definitely think they shaped who we were and I'm glad we had those games. They helped us in the end because in that last game we were losing, we weren't freaked out.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, for sure. That is crazy. You were two and five at one point. I had forgotten about that.

Speaker 2:

Yep, woo and all winnable games. Point, I had forgotten about that. Yep and all winnable games, all games. Honestly, if we played all five of those games at the end of the season, I think we win them all. They're great.

Speaker 3:

We just weren't ready to win then yeah yeah, it's all about peaking at the right time.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, the evolution of the team throughout the year, just like march, that's right and look at that. That's a perfect segue march madness this guy's already good March Madness. Now you're not even watching any games right now.

Speaker 2:

I'm going down right now. I was watching some of my house. Who do you guys like? I'll tell you my team.

Speaker 1:

Now, okay, let's talk about who we like, and then we're going to have a little contest here. We're going to play. Okay, all right, I'll explain the rules in a second. Okay, let's go around the room. Let's start over here with Jaden. Who do you like? Who do you like, just in general, in general, in general, who's going to win it?

Speaker 3:

I really, really, really, really like Auburn. I really like Auburn. I like their bench energy. I know they got a couple older guys.

Speaker 2:

I know they got a couple younger guys. I feel like that combo of the old and the young I feel like that will take them far in this one, especially the bench energy. That's what you really need.

Speaker 3:

Sometimes the starters aren't clicking. You need somebody to come hit a shot. Change momentum.

Speaker 2:

They got Todd Pettiford coming off the bench and I feel like that's going to be huge for them, so Auburn.

Speaker 3:

You're going with Auburn. Auburn, I think I got to take Duke. I mean, if you look future wizard Cooper Flagg, he's near unstoppable.

Speaker 1:

I hope he's the future.

Speaker 3:

I mean, they just have so many five stars surrounded by them. I mean they're in a perfect spot to succeed.

Speaker 1:

I hate agreeing with you, but I do like Duke, but I like Florida.

Speaker 2:

Man.

Speaker 1:

Florida is tough and they played the best conference and they won the best conference tournament they can close out games. They can close out games. They got a lot of players. I agree. I like Florida sneaking up on some. I don't know if they're sneaking up on anybody, but I like Florida who you got.

Speaker 2:

This is funny. Every one of us is taking a one seed. I'm going Houston, they're going to get it this year, houston.

Speaker 1:

Houston. You think they're even going to get by Gonzaga. Yeah, oh yeah. Who said Gonzaga's going to win?

Speaker 2:

They are the and I'm a big Gonzaga fan. I love Mark Q. They're one of the. So there's only a couple teams that could win. According to previous years, you have to be top 10 in Ken Palms in offensive defensive efficiency. Houston's one of them. The funny thing is the other two teams are Duke and Florida Florida.

Speaker 1:

No, auburn.

Speaker 2:

No, auburn, no, auburn. Auburn had a scary one today, so maybe that refocuses them.

Speaker 1:

That could refocus them.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, you're right, I was hoping they'd lose. Funny story Two Churches. Last year I went down May have skipped one or two practices Went down to the Bahamas to watch Watch Maryland play and they were playing at the one. We stayed at the Atlantis. So the Battle for Atlantis was there and Auburn was there and I actually ran into Pearl and I got a picture of Bruce Pearl. Ah, Nice guy.

Speaker 1:

Nobody mentions Maryland. Here we are in Maryland. We were all just at the University of Maryland on Friday night and nobody mentions Maryland. Can Maryland make a run?

Speaker 2:

Can our local?

Speaker 1:

school make a run.

Speaker 2:

I don't think any Big Ten team can make a run. The conference is not that strong.

Speaker 1:

That's a take right there. That's a take right there. All right, here's what we're going to do, All right Okay give it to me.

Speaker 1:

We have four people. We're going to have four-round draft. We each. We have four people. We're going to have four round draft. We each have to pick four teams. Okay, all right now, here's how you win. You got to collect the most points, but here's how points come. We take the the round so and your seed so, if you're if in round one, you get the seed number times one. In round two, you get the seed number times two. In round three the sweet 16 you get the seed number times two. In round three the sweet 16, you get the seed number times four. In the elite eight get the seed number times five. In the final four, you get the seed number times seven. And in the championship game, you get the seed number times eight. So if you think about that, a number one seed might take you all the way out. But, man, if you can pick up a 12 or a 13 or 11, and they only win one or two games, you could get some more points.

Speaker 1:

You could get some gold. So what's our order going to be?

Speaker 2:

here We'll go with the young bucks first.

Speaker 1:

How about we'll snake it, but we'll go youngest to oldest. Which one of you guys is the youngest?

Speaker 3:

October 28th, 07. Oh, I'm the youngest.

Speaker 1:

All right, so we'll go Jaden Gray, and then what? Maybe me?

Speaker 2:

I'll be the oldest.

Speaker 1:

We'll go Coach Civic and I'll go last. I'll go last as the old guy, We'll get the next one and then I get the number one pick after that. All right, so Jaden is up first with his pick.

Speaker 2:

All right, after a long time of data collected, I'm going to have to go with UNC. I feel like they're a low C, but they can compete with anybody. I mean, that's UNC still, man. I know they barely lost to Duke, even though they have the flag and all that, but they can compete with anybody in the country. They're 11th seed. They probably won two or three games. That's a lot of points.

Speaker 3:

I feel like that's the best team I can take off the bat. So North Carolina, the number one pick. People might not like this going two, especially because they have a rough journey. But give me a penny in the Memphis.

Speaker 1:

Oh, you're taking Memphis this early.

Speaker 3:

Led by PJ Haggerty, averaging 21.8 a game. He's a baller.

Speaker 1:

Guy's got some stats for us. All right, coach, you're up.

Speaker 2:

So I'm going to come back to that one. I'll go with Houston.

Speaker 1:

You're going to take Houston. He's taking the one seed.

Speaker 3:

That's fine.

Speaker 1:

All right, I'm going to take Ooh, this is a tough one'm gonna take a two seed. I'm gonna take st john's. I was gonna go there. Good job, I like it st john's. And well, I get. I get two back to back yeah, back. Definitely definitely helps that all right, st john's, I don't want to take someone in that same. All right, I'm gonna. I'm gonna go'm going to go a little crazy here. I'm going to take a 13 seed. I'm going to go with Yale.

Speaker 2:

I've seen them play. No, they got some dogs.

Speaker 1:

Yale and St John's.

Speaker 2:

I'm sticking up in that northeast area they got a 16 kid left the yards in 20 of the game and they have defense player here on the team. He's a dog.

Speaker 3:

I've seen him play. I think you guys are counting out Texas A&M.

Speaker 1:

Like this St John's and Yale.

Speaker 3:

Yale's legit I got mine.

Speaker 2:

We go back to coach, so I'm thinking. Here's a little stat for you, since the playing game happened, one of them has made the Sweet 16. That's why I was pissed. I'm going to take the other one. Xavier, you're going with Xavier.

Speaker 3:

They're very consistent.

Speaker 1:

I don't know. I don't know if I like that one. I don't know if I like that one, I like it.

Speaker 2:

One of them is going to make it. It's happened every year. I was going to go with North Carolina. Because I think they have a better chance, I'm going to take it.

Speaker 1:

Xavier. All right, you're up, grah.

Speaker 3:

I'm between two teams here and I think the deciding factor is one team is going to have to go through Duke. So give me, led by former Hokie Sean Paguela, give me Old Ness.

Speaker 1:

Old Ness. That's a very interesting one.

Speaker 3:

Okay, I got my list. Alright, you're up, jim, I'm being gutsy today I'm taking another team that's lower than a 10 seed I'm taking McNeese, mcneese I have him on the Sweet 16. I have him on the Sweet 16.

Speaker 2:

Did they?

Speaker 3:

win today. They're up big at half right now Big at half. So he won 13 at half time. Sounds good to me.

Speaker 1:

So you got a little McNeese.

Speaker 3:

All right, so let's run down what we got.

Speaker 1:

Hey, somebody had to take them. All. Right, let me run down what we got so far. I have St John's and Yale, coach has Houston and Xavier Jaden has UNC and McNeese and Gray has Memphis and Ole Miss. So that puts you back up, Right?

Speaker 3:

Yes, Now this is where it gets tough, so took Yale that was my third pick To be honest with you.

Speaker 2:

Ohio State football fan. Give me Michigan, though.

Speaker 1:

Michigan.

Speaker 3:

Yep, give me Michigan. They are getting hot right now. They're hot at the right time. They won five, Remember they won.

Speaker 2:

They won the Big Ten Championship. They won the Big Ten Championship. They're hot. They won eight of the last ten Give me Michigan.

Speaker 1:

That's interesting though.

Speaker 3:

It, but I'm going to take the more experienced team. Give me Caleb Love in Arizona.

Speaker 1:

Arizona.

Speaker 2:

All right, I'll take Kentucky Blueblood.

Speaker 1:

Kentucky, with no doubt. All right, so I get to finish it out with my next two. Hang on. So I got one over here. I got a strategy I'm taking one team from each region, all right. So I'm going to go with all right. In the Midwest, I'm going to go with another number two, I'm going with Tennessee, and then in the East, who is going to come out of the East? Has anybody got this team yet? I'm going to go with Wisconsin.

Speaker 3:

Ooh, nice. Wisconsin yeah that's what I said. They have already won.

Speaker 1:

That's right. That's right, that's right. We got a couple of teams that have won, all right, so that I'm locked up. I got St John's, yale, tennessee and Wisconsin back to coach.

Speaker 2:

Oh, I'm going all the water. Bobby Moe, Robert Morris.

Speaker 1:

Robert Morris.

Speaker 2:

Yep, we got Alabama 15-2.

Speaker 1:

I was going to say Robert Morris, even in the tournament. Oh yeah, here they are. Wow, that is a gutsy move right there, robert Morris.

Speaker 2:

They am a hell of a coach. This guy can coach.

Speaker 1:

I wouldn't mind seeing Alabama get knocked down the first round.

Speaker 3:

I might go risky again. Are you up, you're up, I'm up, I got risk the man's averaging 20.5. Arguably the best point guard in the country. Give me Diamond Dent in New Mexico. Jeremy King, back in high school.

Speaker 1:

Give me Diamond.

Speaker 2:

Dent in New Mexico, new Mexico. You played with Jerry McCain back in high school. He's a dog.

Speaker 1:

I said, Jayden, you're taking the last pick. Nobody has touched Maryland yet.

Speaker 3:

Nobody has touched Maryland. I don't think anyone is. I'm not going to touch Maryland. I'm not going to touch Maryland, but I'm going to take a team in the region Okay.

Speaker 2:

This team's a sleeper.

Speaker 1:

Give me Colorado State, colorado State, colorado State. They're going to get enough. They're going to beat Memphis.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, I don't know about that man.

Speaker 1:

I'm looking at Jaden's. You might be out before tomorrow.

Speaker 1:

I might I live in that, all right. So here's the final recap. We'll start with Jaden. We got North Carolina, mcneese, michigan, colorado State. We got Gray, memphis, ole Miss, arizona, new Mexico. We got Coach, houston, xavier, kentucky and the team that I didn't even realize was in the tournament Robert Morris. And then we got me, st John's, yale, tennessee and Wisconsin. All right, people, if you're listening to this, we're going to get the show out by tomorrow. They're going to have a little bit of an advantage because they're going to have some winners, but we're okay with that. They got to put their four up. Put their four up in the comments and we'll see what we got, let's go.

Speaker 1:

All right, coach, okay, thank you, coach Okay, thank you guys Appreciate it. Any parting words for us?

Speaker 2:

No, march, madness, Best time of the year. Let's go.

Speaker 1:
