Today we have a new Hawk Talk short, dedicated 100% to an incredible achievement by our team, our school and our community. The South River girls basketball team will play Oakland Mills at the University of Maryland for the state championship tonight, friday March 14th, at 6pm. The girls are on an unbelievable run, having won 16 games in a row en route to a 21-6 overall record. On Tuesday night South River outlasted top-seeded Oakdale in a gritty defensive battle 46-43, in the Class 3A state semifinals. On a night where offense was hard to come by, senior Riley Adams provided a spark. She scored a team-high 15 points on five three-pointers. We needed every ounce of defensive effort inside a chaotic final minute. Oakdale cut it to a one-point game with 26.3 seconds remaining and regained possession on a jump ball with an opportunity to take the lead. Oakdale inbounded the ball but missed a three-point shot. Junior Key West iced the victory on a pair of free throws with a second remaining.
Speaker 1:This will be South River's third state title appearance in program history and first since 2005. Our Seahawks will play Oakland Mills, who beat Baltimore Poly Institute 59-51 in the other semifinal matchup. Oakland Mills will make its second state championship game appearance and first since its lone state title in 1998. It's going to be a fun night at the University of Maryland. So if you're listening to this podcast, you got to get there. The school will be bringing five buses of students. We'll post the parking map on Instagram for all those who are driving separately. You got to be there. South River Nation Wear blue, get loud and let's prepare for what's going to be an amazing night. To get us all fired up, we have a little surprise for our team. So to kick us off, here is South River Athletic Director David Klingel.
