Speaker 1:

All right, folks, we're on the eve of another clash with Southern high school. Our boys and girls teams, both JV and varsity, will play over the next two nights, despite the snowy weather outside. The girls JV will try to continue their undefeated season versus the Bulldogs. Tonight, thursday, february 13th, at 7 30 PM. The boys JV will play right before them at 6 o'clock. They're hoping to jump above .500 with a big

Speaker 1:

win. The boys and girls varsity basketball team will play Southern, or shall I say, harwood Coach Hall Friday night, starting with the girls at 5 pm and the boys to follow at 6.30 pm. Our girls varsity team has won eight games in a row. Coming into the Harwood game this episode, we're going to have the chance to meet all our senior members of that team, and there are a lot of them. But first the boys varsity team comes in the Friday's matchup with Harwood at 17-2. Now, I did a little research and, although some of our 70s and 80s alumni from the last show claim to have the best record ever, what I discovered is that the 91-92 team was 19-4. That's back when, yes, coach Hall played. Regardless, we do have a chance at some history. We sit at 17 wins with three to go. You do the

Speaker 1:

math. And lastly, let's all give some good vibes to our cheer team whom, after multiple weather cancellations, will be traveling tonight, thursday, to compete in regionals with a chance to move on the States. And with that let's meet our senior members of the 2024-2025 South River Girls Varsity Basketball Team. Enjoy, all right, we are here, with God. We got a lot of seniors on this girls basketball team. We got nine, nine, yes, nine seniors. We're going to talk to all of them. We're going to get some good insight. We're going to learn a lot about you guys. So why don't we start right here?

Speaker 2:

I'm Riley Adams, number 24. I'm Skylar Woodyard. I'm number two.

Speaker 3:

Sammy Clark, number three.

Speaker 4:

I'm Regan Ogle, number 33. Number 10.

Speaker 1:

All right, let's start big. What's it mean to play basketball at South River?

Speaker 2:

I feel like we're all friends. It's a great atmosphere. It's very positive. We're all always encouraging each other to be better. It's really competitive at practice.

Speaker 3:

We're always getting at it. It starts with relationships between all of us.

Speaker 6:

We're all pretty close which makes it a lot better. Yeah, we've all been playing together for countless amount of us. We're all pretty close, which makes it a lot better. Yeah, we've all been playing together for a countless amount of years.

Speaker 1:

Because you guys all played in shooters together for a long time. So this is it. This is the team that has played together for a very, very long time. They're all getting old now.

Speaker 4:

I feel like South River basketball is also very competitive. That's something that all the teams not just girls basketball, but boys too, and it's something fun for everyone to watch and be a part of.

Speaker 1:

We're kind of like a basketball school.

Speaker 5:

Would you say that?

Speaker 1:

Yes, everybody says lacrosse and all that it's basketball.

Speaker 7:

Yes.

Speaker 1:

It might be girls basketball, all right. So, as you look ahead getting very close to the end of your high school career, hopefully it'll go for another couple weeks, maybe a month, maybe longer, I don't know. But how do you?

Speaker 7:

think basketball has helped you guys shape who you are. For me, I've built great friendships.

Speaker 6:

I've learned how to manage my time well yeah, kind of the same thing as Carly.

Speaker 3:

Commitment. Always being here on time, every day showing up, makes you like a better person.

Speaker 2:

I feel like it's made me like mentally and physically stronger, like having to endure, like all the stuff like we've all gone through.

Speaker 1:

Yes, and you've all done it together, which?

Speaker 4:

is cool. Yeah, yes, ACLs and discipline too, Like you have to always be disciplined and doing the right thing to make the team work hard.

Speaker 1:

This team, this group, you guys have had some injuries too.

Speaker 2:

Yeah Me, sam and Regan have all torn our ACLs.

Speaker 1:

And we have another Key West. She's a junior.

Speaker 2:

She tore hers too, yeah.

Speaker 1:

But you're all back.

Speaker 4:

We're all back, we're rolling.

Speaker 1:

We're rolling right now. Right, can we talk about the season a little bit Like how's it going, it's going really good.

Speaker 2:

How do we feel it's going Good, good and counting we're doing yeah and counting we're undefeated right now.

Speaker 7:

We had a couple competitive teams we've played out of county.

Speaker 4:

Ever yes ever, and we've only lost by like less than five for all of them, so they're all close.

Speaker 1:

That's good. So we got it. How many more games we got left? We got senior night on Friday night.

Speaker 6:

And then we play. Are we regular season? Are?

Speaker 2:

we regular season. Can we play Meade on Tuesday?

Speaker 6:

Wednesday we play Meade, and then we play Southern and then we play Northeast.

Speaker 1:

Four games left. Then we go into County, then we go into the big tournament. What's our predictions? What are we shooting for?

Speaker 3:

States All the way.

Speaker 1:

You can't make me look bad, because I said at the beginning of the year you were winning States.

Speaker 5:

I got a little nervous.

Speaker 1:

I got a little nervous, but you're on a roll now. I think we're doing alright. How have I got a little nervous? We're on a roll. I got a little nervous, but you're on a roll now, so I think we're doing all right. All right, so how have you improved since you were a freshman? You remember coming in as a freshman.

Speaker 2:

That was four years ago.

Speaker 6:

Definitely confidence yeah and definitely maturity, freshman year. When Zivic would yell at me I would cry, but now I just kind of laugh it off.

Speaker 4:

We were all a little bit like all over the place Well, not all of us, but I definitely was all over the place freshman year. But I feel like as I've gotten older, I've gotten more like. I don't know the word.

Speaker 7:

Also one thing that you, if you like, pay attention to. Every single one of us has gotten stronger physically.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, Like playing with each other.

Speaker 7:

we have gotten stronger, you can tell.

Speaker 4:

And we all know each other Like we can. We've been playing with each other for four years on high school now, I think also playing as a freshman.

Speaker 2:

I think we were all very timid, but now we know that we belong and we are supposed to be on the court and doing what we do.

Speaker 1:

Yes, and you can tell you guys have played a long time together as watching. It's fun to watch because you kind of all know what each other is going to do and your strengths and weaknesses. It's fun. So what advice do you give to this younger? We've got a good younger group of people coming up. What's your advice to them?

Speaker 2:

What do they have to know now? It?

Speaker 3:

goes by really fast it goes by very fast. Don't get down on yourself.

Speaker 4:

Next play Next play and make sure you love it, because if you don't love it then it's not going to be fun and you're not going to want to work hard for it Very true. Play for your team not.

Speaker 6:

Oh yeah, don't be selfish always like don't complain about practice, because then there's always people that are injured, that wish they could practice, like with all the injuries we've been through very good point, alright, so what kind of emotions are you expecting as you come out for senior night?

Speaker 4:

that's kind of a weird thing right. It's sweet. Definitely it's going to be so sad come out for senior night. That's kind of a that's a weird thing, right? Yeah, definitely it's going to be so sad, more bitter.

Speaker 3:

Just because I've been with you guys for so long, I feel like life without you guys is like crazy.

Speaker 7:

It's going to be weird, yeah, I don't know.

Speaker 1:

Is there any like traditions or like little special things you want to do on senior night?

Speaker 6:

Play together Us five.

Speaker 2:

I don't know. I think Southern for a minute. We all five have not played with each other because we've been hurt.

Speaker 1:

This five has that been on the court very much At all Together?

Speaker 4:

At the same time. But senior night, we're all starting, alright. So this is our starting five the fab five, the fab five.

Speaker 5:

I like it.

Speaker 1:

Alright, we've got gotta talk about coach. How has coach impacted you throughout these years? Coach zivic, he's a character. Am I allowed to say that?

Speaker 4:

yeah he makes you work hard, like he doesn't make anything easy yes you have to work, you have to work for

Speaker 3:

it yeah letting things like go over your head, like when he says something, like don't take it to heart, like just keep working hard, like don't be sad about it yeah, just keep, definitely has pushed me to be my very best, yeah same.

Speaker 4:

He does it to make you better so all the things he says. You just got to take it as constructive criticism.

Speaker 2:

He knows how, like he knows our potential and how good we'd be, so he pushes us.

Speaker 4:

For that reason, like you, just have to keep playing, yeah, especially this season, because this is our season so exactly anything you want to say to him in particular.

Speaker 1:

I mean he may or may not hear it. Yeah, he will the world's gonna be he better watch he better yeah thanks Zivic. Thanks Zivic who else do you want to say thank you, though? There's a lot of people probably that have helped you get this far definitely Coach Tim.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, making practice fun. He like balances it.

Speaker 7:

Yeah, there's like Zivic, and then there's him and then there's the good coach, coach Tim.

Speaker 1:

That's what I'm hearing, okay.

Speaker 3:

Chance and Savannah. I feel like, as a girl, they know how to help us a lot.

Speaker 2:

And since they played with them they understand how we're feeling. They've been someone to talk to.

Speaker 5:

Yeah, that's very true.

Speaker 1:

I keep calling them my favorite coaches. I guess I've got to stop saying that. But what's been the most rewarding part of playing for this team, this school? How are you going to remember these days?

Speaker 7:

That's a good question. I'll never forget the people, yeah.

Speaker 3:

Ever. The energy, the happiness that you feel when you go into the gym with these people.

Speaker 2:

No matter what everyone's going through on the outside. When we come into the gym, we're all ready to work and push each other, but we still have fun though, even when we're competitive.

Speaker 4:

And I feel like everyone that plays South River basketball always comes back too, so it's nice to see everyone that's played coming back to support us, and we'll do the same thing in the future too. It's a good community.

Speaker 1:

All right, you guys give me some funny stories about one another. You, you gotta give me some funny stories about one another. You guys have played together for a long time.

Speaker 6:

There's gotta be something good here. Carly scored on the wrong basket. Oh my gosh.

Speaker 1:

Yes, you did in Tennessee oh my gosh, when was this? Like two years ago, sophomore year, oh so relatively yeah it was the jump ball.

Speaker 2:

I think we did the jump ball and we were facing that way and she just took it and went that's a good one. So the first two points, yep all, right all right, you gotta attack them now uh, why can I not think of anything? We definitely have like good stuff oh my gosh today. Yeah, we did. We like I don't know what we flash mob specifically we just started dancing in the middle practice we started dancing.

Speaker 7:

In the middle of practice we started dancing.

Speaker 6:

Like yesterday, we had a dance routine yesterday with Coach Jem yeah.

Speaker 7:

We just started going we're in the middle of a drill. And then started dancing to a song.

Speaker 1:

I like it.

Speaker 4:

And then we ran away. So Zivic is.

Speaker 1:

This will come out in a week.

Speaker 4:

So, Zivic is. I don't know, is he scared of hot dogs?

Speaker 6:

He just hates them. He hates them. He's scared of a hot dog. Yeah, and the smell.

Speaker 4:

So we like bought a bunch of hot dogs and we're just going to like hang them up around his room.

Speaker 6:

So, like when he pops them, the hot dog has to fly out.

Speaker 1:

I like it All right. So Next, what is happening next? Where are you going? Schools. What happens after high school.

Speaker 7:

I am going to Frostburg to play basketball.

Speaker 1:

So we've got a Frostburg player.

Speaker 5:

Yes, Skylar just committed today.

Speaker 4:

Oh, this is breaking news.

Speaker 6:

Yeah breaking news. Skylar Woodyard committed to St Mary's St.

Speaker 1:

Mary's College of.

Speaker 6:

Maryland.

Speaker 1:

All right? Yeah, that's big news. Congratulations, yes.

Speaker 2:

I'm not sure yet. I want to play basketball. I've been talking to a couple schools. I'm not sure yet, though.

Speaker 4:

All right Me as well, I'm not sure yet Not sure.

Speaker 3:

Me too, but definitely not playing basketball.

Speaker 1:

No basketball, no basketball for me, all right.

Speaker 4:

What do you want them to remember about this team? Maybe like our chemistry together.

Speaker 2:

I feel like the way we like pass and shoot and score together is like memorable. I feel like the way we look when we play like we're having fun, like we're never, like we look like we want to be there and like we're enjoying it yeah.

Speaker 6:

Yeah. And it's like never impossible to overcome anything, because this team has overcome so many things. Very true. Oh, yes, yes.

Speaker 1:

I was hoping one of you would say maybe don't remember the banner that's going to be there.

Speaker 3:

I was going to say remember us winning states, but I didn't know. I'm allowed to say that you can't say that.

Speaker 5:

I'll say it.

Speaker 1:

One last thing, final word that you want to say. You got a mic in front of you. You can say anything.

Speaker 4:

Thank you, that's good Thank you to all of you supporting us. It means so much, and we wouldn't be able to be where we are without everyone supporting us Family, friends, coaches, teammates. That's rad, yeah, okay be able to be where we are without, like everyone, supporting us, family, friends, coaches I think on that we're good we're gonna be funny.

Speaker 1:

It's fine guys you guys are gonna be so much better yeah, we are. Yeah, this is more the personality. We won't say that loud. All right, we are recording now.

Speaker 8:

All right, so start here.

Speaker 1:

Name and number.

Speaker 8:

I'm Adele Norton. I'm number 13. I'm Claire Worway.

Speaker 7:

I'm number 21.

Speaker 9:

I'm Adriana Kane. I'm number 4. I'm Ellie Ox zero all right.

Speaker 1:

So this is the fun group. Yes, all right. So you got to tell me what. What does it mean for you guys to be part of this part of this part of this team, part of south river, like you're in a big tradition of bell ringing?

Speaker 9:

yeah, um, I think it's more more than a team. It's like a sisterhood. We definitely are more than just like teammates, like if I'm referring to one of them, I don't say teammate, I say like my friend and it's like I enjoy coming to practice every day.

Speaker 8:

I enjoy coming to the games. Like I get excited to go.

Speaker 7:

It's like so much fun it's very rewarding, just like being with people that you love like every day. Like even though for me, like basketball is more of like a challenging sport for me, like I feel like I'm still like very motivated to go to practice every day because I'm like my best friends.

Speaker 1:

That's a good thing to have. All right, you're looking ahead. Your high school career in basketball is quickly coming to an end. Hopefully not for a while, but how has basketball helped you guys shape yourself as going through high school?

Speaker 8:

I think it's made me a much stronger person. It's pushed me to be my best every single day, made me more confident, stronger and just more motivated all around.

Speaker 9:

I agree. It also definitely teaches you how to shake off pressure, because in basketball there's a lot of pressure. Throughout the years I've learned how to not take it so personal.

Speaker 1:

There is a lot more pressure in basketball, right, because people are almost on top of you Very intense, that's kind of intense and we have big, so personal. There is a lot more pressure in basketball right, because, like, people are like almost like on top of you that's kind of intense and we have big crowds here. This is cool. How have you seen yourself improve since you were a freshman? Did you all play when you were freshmen? So you've been four years, all right. How's it changed?

Speaker 7:

I guess I like see myself like I don know, like I feel like freshman year, like I would be, like shaking, going onto the court, like very nervous. It's just like a atmosphere that like I'd much rather be playing on like a field than I would a court. That's just like me. Personally, I don't like things like all up close to my face, so I feel like now I'm definitely more like I don't know. I just feel like more used to it now, like I've like adapted to the like.

Speaker 7:

I agree, pressures and the confidence that I need to have.

Speaker 9:

Freshman year, me, adela and Claire were on JV together and I think we kind of took it more as a joke than a sport.

Speaker 7:

Yeah, like playdates.

Speaker 9:

Yeah, so now I think we take it a little more serious, more think of it as a sport, not just goofy, and kind of going off what Claire said.

Speaker 8:

It's definitely less tense. I remember freshman year tryouts. I was so nervous, but going into senior year I was much more confident and felt good.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, confidence. So what advice do you give to the younger players? You've got a bunch of JV players out there. What's advice to them?

Speaker 9:

Don't take things so personal, because there'll be moments where Zivic might say something to you and you might feel like you're going to cry. But don't take it personal.

Speaker 1:

It's Zivic making people cry.

Speaker 9:

Oops, sorry.

Speaker 7:

I feel like you need to focus on the message of things more than the delivery, and I feel like that's universal for all sports. It's just focus on what someone's saying to you or what they're trying to do to make you better, more than how they say it to you, because we all say things that we don't mean in the way we say it.

Speaker 1:

Because, at the end of the day, they're all just trying to make you better.

Speaker 9:

Right. Also, if somebody gives you criticism, take it as feedback. Don't take it personal as well. Just use it to improve, because I know there's been times where things have been said and take it to heart when it's just like advice.

Speaker 7:

I also think you should have fun. Yeah, I was just going to say that have fun.

Speaker 7:

It goes by so fast and that's so like cringy to say, but like it's true, you don't want to like waste every day, just like going through the motions and like I don't know, just complaining about practice, like because like at some point, like you're going to be, oh, I miss like being with those girls. Like there's nine of us. Like I'll always like remember our team and like we've had such a good like connection and like I feel like that doesn't happen everywhere. It's like we're all friends. There's not one of us who's not a part of like our group. Like we're all so close I feel like so enjoyable and there are nine of you.

Speaker 9:

Yeah, that's a big class yeah, we've all grown up together what's gonna happen next year.

Speaker 1:

You're all gonna be gone, we'll see what happens, but, um, I mean, what do you expect it on friday night? Like friday night's gonna be kind of wild right, big crowd, senior night what kind of emotions I don't know.

Speaker 8:

I hope it's very like energetic like everybody's cheering for everyone and like I don't know it'll be a good game because it's Broadneck, so it's like yeah it's a rival, so it'll be beat Broadneck. Yeah, beat those Bruins but I think it'll be really fun. Yeah, I think it'll be fun. Bittersweet moments bittersweet moments.

Speaker 1:

Alright, any special traditions that you might want to share, like what do you do pre-game? Last home game? I feel like we kind of were always in our own world before.

Speaker 6:

This is gross, though. No, no, no, don't say it.

Speaker 1:

I don't want to know what that is.

Speaker 8:

I think just in the team room, the locker room we have so much fun, we just joke around.

Speaker 9:

Let's just say in small words Ellie chases people, Bro. No, Me and Tatum chase each other.

Speaker 1:

I don't know if I want to know anymore.

Speaker 5:

It's just funny.

Speaker 1:

Let's talk about coach for a second, or all your coaches. How have they impacted you? Who were some of the coaches that had the most influence?

Speaker 7:

okay to me, like chance has been with like adrienne and I since freshman year, because she helped out when we had coach leo.

Speaker 7:

So I feel like having her and savannah like consistent for the past four years has been like so nice like have a familiar face and like I don't always go to them for like basketball advice or anything like that, but it's just like nice to just like be able to go up and talk to them and ask how their day was and like it's just like a comfortable like coach player, like I agree with chance, like chance and samina, but chance is just always in like a good mood and if you're having a bad day, if you just like, even look at her like you smile, like she's definitely a mood booster I would say Coach Tim, because I transferred last year so I was like new to everything but I always knew him from church back at home and he just like helped me get my manager position last year when I couldn't actually play and yeah, it was fun winning counties and Coach Tim thinks don and Coach Zivics.

Speaker 1:

Don't forget Zivics.

Speaker 7:

And Zivics. Yeah, I feel like we bond. We're both Steelers fans, okay.

Speaker 1:

We bond over that but.

Speaker 7:

I think that Zivics is just like somebody that we all like joke about but we never like really like think about, like how much we appreciate him.

Speaker 9:

I think something I'm grateful for for Zivic is he's always very serious, but there will be times where he'll just pop up.

Speaker 7:

He's so funny right now.

Speaker 9:

Sometimes he'll just say the most random things and just catches you off guard and it just makes you laugh at yourself.

Speaker 8:

You can be so comfortable around him.

Speaker 1:

What are you going to miss about all your teammates? Because you're probably not all going to be at the same college, definitely.

Speaker 8:

I just think how comfortable we are with each other.

Speaker 7:

I'm not afraid to be myself or anything.

Speaker 1:

And then what's next? What's next? What are we doing?

Speaker 8:

I'm going to Campbell University to play lacrosse.

Speaker 1:

Campbell University. Where's that? North Carolina, Yep.

Speaker 7:

And then I'm going to High Point to play lacrosse, so we'll be playing each other.

Speaker 5:

Oh, will you play against each other? Oh, that's exciting. I'm going to towson, I'm majoring in criminal justice oh nice, and I'm hoping to hear back from tampa soon.

Speaker 1:

And major journalism, yeah all right, well, good luck thank you yeah, all right. What do you want people to remember about this class?

Speaker 7:

hmm, I'm still stuck on the banner going up yeah, for the best, yeah yeah I feel like all around, like our group is just very like athletic and talented, and like the bond that we have like allows us to like all be leaders on the team. Like I don't know.

Speaker 9:

I feel like it's special you never have nine seniors on a team of 14 yeah yeah, I think like our bond should be remembered because, like, like claire said, like you don't get nine seniors on a team and they're all friends. We all are friends if we all get along.

Speaker 1:

I wonder if anybody ever looked into you. Have to be up there as far as all-time wins as a group.

Speaker 7:

It's a lot the last four years.

Speaker 9:

It's gotta be up there. Freshman year we went 21-0.

Speaker 6:

This group's gotta be pretty, be up there.

Speaker 9:

Freshman year we went 21-0., 21-0., 21-0. One county.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, this group's got to be pretty high up there. Yeah, All right. One final thing. You want to tell anybody about anything?

Speaker 5:

Can you say hi to Lupe if you ask him for me?

Speaker 1:

I can do that, thank you. We go way back.

Speaker 8:

I think, enjoy every little moment there is and it's not just like about being a senior, but just like I don't know so much more than basketball. Have fun, learn. There's so many lessons to be learned.

Speaker 9:

Build relationships today we talked like what. We went to zivics and we talked about like next play and I just want to share that in front of our games I shot and I hit the back side of the backboard and just next play.

Speaker 1:

Next play. There you go. Next play, next play, and.

Speaker 9:

Zivic actually said something to me about it today, and that was in the beginning of December, and he hasn't let it go.

Speaker 1:

I have a feeling he's that kind of guy, he's not, he's not, he's not but he tries.

Speaker 9:

Next play, next play, forget she hasn't forgotten.

Speaker 1:

She hasn't forgotten.

Speaker 9:

I hold it close to me. Well, that next play happened like five times.

Speaker 1:

A lot of next plays.

Speaker 9:

I haven't even played. I've been injured.

Speaker 1:

I know, but like the first thing, Are you going to be back at all?

Speaker 5:

Probably not, probably not.

Speaker 1:

It's a torn leg Rodneck on Friday senior night I say we go full court press the entire time. Let's blow them out.

Speaker 8:

That's just my opinion.

Speaker 1:

Just my opinion, and then we're on the run. Let's do this, ladies. Everybody's still in the room. Let's do this, let's go. I want to run at states because I predicted it at the beginning of the year. I want to see it happen, all right.

Speaker 3:
