Speaker 1:Our cheer team qualified for regionals last week and will compete on Thursday night at Hartford Community College in the East Regionals with a chance to move on to the States. The hockey team celebrated senior night this past Friday with a 12-0 victory over Kent Island. They'll play their final regular season game this Friday night versus Easton Island. They'll play their final regular season game this Friday night versus Easton. It starts at 9 pm at the Bowie Ice Center. Our wrestling team finished the regular season last week with wins over Southern 74-76 and London Town 43-30, to finish the season with a record of 23-4. The Seahawks will have a much-needed week off to reset before the grueling postseason. The path to States will be released soon as the Seahawks look to make it to the state finals for a fourth year in a row, followed by the individual county and state tournaments.
Speaker 1:Our girls' varsity basketball team is now 11-6 after six straight wins. We have two home games this week Tuesday vs Glen Burnie at 6 pm and Friday vs Broadneck at 5 pm. The JV girls remain undefeated at an impressive 14-0. They won a close one at John Carroll 39-36 and took down Baltimore Poly 49-27 this past Saturday. They faced Glen Burnie on Tuesday at 4-45 and then Broadneck on Thursday at 6 pm. Both games are home.
Speaker 1:Our boys JV sit at 7-7 and are on the road this week at Glen Burnie on Tuesday and then at Broadneck on Thursday. And lastly, our boys varsity basketball team lost only their second game of the year in overtime to Crofton Friday night 76-74. That puts them at 15-2 as they go on the road to Glen Burnie Tuesday at 6 pm and then back at home for a doubleheader with the girls Friday night versus Broadneck. So with that let's dive into some fun conversations from Alumni Night. Enjoy South River Boys and Girls Basketball Alumni Night. And, as always for this special night, I'm joined by my co-host for the evening, the one and only Andy Long. How are you?
Speaker 2:How are you guys doing? Thank you, Tom, for doing this. Hey, we're doing well.
Speaker 1:man, I'm excited to sit down.
Speaker 2:I haven't seen you in a while man life's been good, we're a little chilly. Look across from us. We've got the veteran Mr Craig Drucker. We're going to get him on.
Speaker 1:We're going to get him on. We're watching a big screen of all of the teams, from all the way back to 1970-something. Right, I got Coach Hall on my left. Did we have the original team?
Speaker 3:I think we do, I think we saw it. It was a little wrinkled, but we saw that.
Speaker 1:I like it. I like it. Okay, before we welcome everyone else on, we need to get a little bit of lay of the land from you guys. Basketball at South River. The boys suffered their first loss of the season this past week at Meade. It happens. North County, no, north County, I'm sorry, not Meade, north County, north County, but regardless, we sit at 13-1. Right Coach, yep 13-1. All right, how are?
Speaker 3:we feeling Good. I mean, it's never easy to lose, but I think we learned a lot on Wednesday night about us and I'm excited to see how we respond tonight. And just vibing the locker room and practice yesterday, I mean our guys are ready to go. You know, Wednesday night was tough Sat down early, came back tied. It had a chance to win it late before. It just didn't make plays. But you know our guys are going to respond. We'll learn from that and pick up the pieces We've been moving, starting in about an hour.
Speaker 1:Starting in about an hour. What are we expecting tonight? How many people are going to be here?
Speaker 3:I'm excited it should be a great crowd we have a show tonight. I think our student body is going to show up tonight. They had a student faculty game during the day here.
Speaker 1:Who won? The student or the faculty? I heard.
Speaker 3:The students won which usually doesn't happen in those days I'm wondering what happened. But really it's taken care of in advance so the faculty can get a win. But I heard the students won today and I think we'll have a great turnout tonight.
Speaker 1:I like it. How many people? How many people signed up?
Speaker 3:For I mean including families and friends. We're respecting 60, 70 people, 75 people. That's a lot of people. Yeah, I think we had close to 30, 35 alumni set up.
Speaker 1:What do you think this means? You're here, you're building a program. I think having all the alumni come back is a great idea.
Speaker 3:It's awesome, our guys, our current guys, they have such respect for the groups that over the past 4, five, six, eight years because they've been in the stand watching it and I think a lot of the conversation we have is it's there as much of an impact the last seven, eight, nine years the team's had. The foundation was really built way before that, you know, in the program and in the school and it's important for our guys to see that. You know, south River High School, the South River community and the South River basketball still mean a lot to a lot of people who were here way down the road.
Speaker 1:Andy, you know all these kids I have you on because you are the, you're kind of the spokesman for the program. You know everybody who walks in here, and so what? Who are you looking forward to stopping by?
Speaker 2:well, the gentleman has just walked in, jim danny baldwin, um. He is probably six, seven years older than me and I was his neighbor, so all through elementary school I had the pleasure of learning how to play two-hand touch football, how to do all that stuff, through Danny Baldwin. He was one of the originals.
Speaker 8:The originals.
Speaker 2:Yeah, so he just walked in the gym.
Speaker 1:All right, so we'll get him on.
Speaker 2:We got him my cousin Ed Jones.
Speaker 1:He just walked in. Not too tall, Too tall Ed, too tall Jones I.
Speaker 2:Two tall. So if I just make it I wasn't sure, yeah, it was last minute, and I think with this it gets contagious. You know he's got 25 alumni and they bring their spouse and all, but then you've got some who heard about it and just show up. Just show up. Yeah, they're starting to show up now I like it.
Speaker 1:We're going to have a full house here. I don't want to keep you too long because I know you got to get ready.
Speaker 3:Oh yeah.
Speaker 1:You got to get ready. But let me ask you this we're going to switch subjects. The girls team we're going to have. We're going to have they're playing right now. We're going to get coach Zivic. When he comes on, we'll have a, we'll have a post game with him. But I need to say this because you and the JV girls team so I got to give a lot of credit to you. I know they have other coaches and the other coaches are doing a great job, but you've had a group of these girls for a long time now and they're playing pretty well.
Speaker 3:They are, they are. They're fun to watch. They're out there having fun. But I tell you what those Savannah and Chance do a great job, they do a tremendous job. Not only do they teach the game, girls compete hard and more importantly than all that, or equally as important, because it is high level and you want to learn and beat but they have a blast playing.
Speaker 1:They're a good team.
Speaker 3:Yeah, I mean my daughter comes home and says hey, you were pretty good.
Speaker 1:Are they much better?
Speaker 3:I got a new saver. That's what my daughter tells me.
Speaker 1:Oh, now wait a minute here, because I feel like I'm a little part of that too. Exactly. I know I don't like that she's replacing both of us with them.
Speaker 3:It hurt but I told you to get in, so you get in. But yeah, they're rolling and I know our senior class, the varsity level is pretty heavy. Quite few seniors who have made a tremendous impact, but there's a lot of good talent coming up A lot of good talent coming up yeah.
Speaker 1:All right, I'm going to let you go on this one. What do we expect tonight?
Speaker 3:I think our guys are going to come out and fight. Yeah, I think they're going to come out and compete. We've kind of gotten in the habit of being complacent, especially early in the games over the past few weeks and it's been a point of emphasis, but it's still actually until the snake actually bites you. It's time to understand what it really feels like, and Wednesday night we got a slow start and came all the way back again, but we just weren't able to finish it off and I think the feeling in the locker room, yeah, I think it was kind of a reality check for our guys. I mean, you know it's never fun losing, but it's certainly something to be learned from and I'm excited to see him come out tonight. I think you're going to see a team with a lot of A different focus and maybe it's a silver lining tonight I think you're going to see a team with a lot of A different focus yeah.
Speaker 1:And maybe it's a silver lining. Silver lining, if you've got to lose one, lose it now, no doubt, before we get on. All right, coach, you need to get ready. I feel like you need to get prepared. You need to get something to eat. I already ate, don't worry about that Get as many people on tonight as we can, yep, and then we're all going to come out and watch a big victory.
Speaker 3:Love it. Tom Banks is doing this. All right, this is good stuff.
Speaker 1:Thank you, Coach. That's Coach Darren Hall. I got Andy Long on for the rest of the evening.
Speaker 2:Let's go, baby, let's go. All right, how have you been? I've been great man. I wanted to pledge to keep his lead. That's pretty good to hear this guy in the back there, yeah, but anyway, to watch our guys. Like Coach said, the last couple games they'll be coming out sort of like, I'd say, sitting on a recliner and it's been working for us. We've been winning, but we gave them a little too much. And I tell you, sitting back watching them fight that second hand, if they play all full quarters like that, we can't be stopped.
Speaker 8:Yeah.
Speaker 2:It was beautiful to see.
Speaker 8:Yeah.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I like it. I think we were down by 21. I think you might have been down by 25 at one point 25, and we came back to tie it and we came back to tie it, yeah, and then just ran out of steam. That's a lot to come back from. We gave them a lot up front, but that's all right.
Speaker 5:Yeah.
Speaker 2:But no, tonight's a great thing, man, I'll tell you. Got a lot of phone calls today, the alumni, the alumni, and when I just came back here to join you, they're coming in now.
Speaker 1:Yeah, so we're going to get a bunch of them on Yep. They're coming in now. Yeah, so we're going to get a bunch of them on Yep. Excellent, you see anybody here you want to jump on right now. How about we get the JV coach over there? Should we get some perspective? So we're going to talk to you, not as an alumni, although you are an alumni.
Speaker 8:Yes, sir, yes sir, 2016. 2016.
Speaker 1:2016,.
Speaker 8:But you're also our Braden Carew.
Speaker 1:Yeah, we're on.
Speaker 2:Let's go.
Speaker 1:Let's go All right. So you've got to give us. We've talked about the varsity team. We've talked about the girls team because I have to. You know, our JV girls team still undefeated. Studs, studs.
Speaker 8:Two of the best coaches in the county as well. They are. They are. Tell us about your team. So my team. You know we're real young. We only have five sophomores, only three returning sophomores. One actually got hurt Tyler Suggs Shout out, tyler Suggs. But I'm real young. I have a lot of freshmen, but I have a lot of good freshman talent Devin Woodyard, dylan Daniels two very promising young talents. Devin Woodyard's also a varsity football player, so very good athlete. I also have Cam Hout. Cam, who, tal, is a sophomore. He's kind of like our, he's the dad of our team. Yeah, keeps everybody together. He keeps everybody going. He locks us in in practice. Um, we have a six foot eight sophomore. Uh, nicholas yotter he's great.
Speaker 5:I saw that big kid he's very big.
Speaker 8:Uh, last year he got sick, um, he lost a lot of weight, so he's kind of gaining the back and getting his basketball back you can't teach six, eight, though can't teach it. But great rim protectors got great hands, got great feet, so he's going to be a problem here. Junior and senior year for varsity, I'm sure.
Speaker 1:So, coach, how do you do it? I mean, it's hard to coach JV.
Speaker 8:It's very hard. They take your best players.
Speaker 1:They bring them up to the varsity Four of them. But I mean, that's great, you've got to keep working with these kids. And then you sit on the bench for the varsity game. You're input in there.
Speaker 6:And it's going to be.
Speaker 1:I mean, you're going to know these kids as they move their way up. No doubt they're going to remember you as the coach.
Speaker 8:Yep, I like to think about it as I'm putting my fabric with the varsity as well. Our overall, our captain is Darren Hall and he's the is going to make everybody very elite, but I like to think I have a little bit of the process. I've coached jonah, I've coached jamie, yeah, I've coached jake, um, I've coached hank, I've coached a couple of the young guys that are now making varsity. So I take it as a positive on me when my young guys that are sophomores make varsity, because it's like I got them for a year, polished them up a little bit, and then darren can steal them from me after that and we can go win games on the varsity level there you go.
Speaker 1:Yeah, there you go. So what's the outlook? Where do you sit right now?
Speaker 8:you're eight and we're like uh, eight and seven, seven and seven something like that about 500 yeah we've had some inconsistency but you know we win some games.
Speaker 8:we're a three-point shooting team so sometimes you know your ninth and tenth graders 14, 15 year olds they sometimes come out and we hit a lot of threes and sometimes we come, come out, we don't hit too many. We have one guy that's super consistent, merrick Norton. He stays between 10 and 15 points every game. He's going to come out, he's going to shoot with confidence. He's going to play very hard. That's something you can't teach as well. We've got a lot of promise and we're just a little inconsistent, but we'll get there.
Speaker 1:You'll? And what are your thoughts on the varsity team? We're going to bounce back tonight.
Speaker 8:We're going to bounce back tonight. I've made some bold statements before and this, in my opinion, is possibly the best South River varsity basketball team we could ever see, until maybe next year when our three juniors become seniors. I've seen a lot of good basketball. I've been around Edgewater forever and I've been coming here since I was five. I've seen a lot of girl teams. I've been coming here since I was five. I've seen a lot of girl teams. I've seen Bree Bolden play. I've seen Jahair Jones play. I've seen all these different kind of guys play. My junior year team won about 15, 16 games. These teams would smoke every team I've seen.
Speaker 8:You're proclaiming right now one of the best, if not the best, South River team that you've seen ever In my 26 years, coming around for 21 years, this is by far, in a way, the best boys basketball team I have ever seen. How do you react to that?
Speaker 2:you know, as an alumni player yeah I agree with him, but I gotta tell you, um, it's the coaching as well. I mean these guys. I had the pleasure of watching b and he shares the coaching responsibility with Kobe. Yeah, and both of those guys I watch play. This guy can shoot lights out the way they do the kids, the way the kids respond to them. That's what it's all about. Wow, you guys are doing a great job. And if you look over here to our right, him and Kobe's family is responsible for that. Spread over there. The mom handmade the mac and cheese and Kobe works at Mission Barbecue and he was able to pull some strings.
Speaker 8:So that's what I like about this the guys are all in, yeah, and I want to say one more thing. I know that Cash and Trey and Blake and all of them are going to listen to this and they're going to say they're going to text me.
Speaker 8:Those are my guys. I've known them for a long time. I grew up with the Herndon sisters that are now Leonard and Brown, but I grew up with them, grew up with the family. Trey Cash, blake I love you guys. Your senior year team was great, but this team's got some talent. They got a lot of Jamie Fins maybe the greatest shooter I've ever seen, and Jonah Hall the poise of a 16, 17-year-old kid on the court is incredible. And they're all juniors and they're all juniors. And then shout out my guy, jake Evans as well. He holds it down at the point. He has his ups and downs but he's the heart and soul of the team and our rim protector. At 6'2", being Alec, I mean he plays his heart out as well.
Speaker 8:Yeah, I like it.
Speaker 2:I'll tell you. Another cool thing is all those names that he just mentioned. The guy that's never been put in the game. He's the BG&E of the team Every day he's the first one there. He keeps it going. So from A to Z on both of these boys' teams they're tapped in.
Speaker 1:I like it. They're tapped in. I like it. We're going to have a fun rest of the season, no doubt.
Speaker 8:No doubt let's bring home a ring to South River Boys basketball. Wouldn't that be great? Let's go a county championship, a regional championship and then ultimately let's get Darren Hall that ring and let's get those three juniors that ring. That would be something, no doubt.
Speaker 3:All right the girls as well.
Speaker 1:Yeah, let's get it.
Speaker 8:Yes, sir, All right I got some special guests here.
Speaker 1:now I got the coaches of our I think, the number one cheer team in all of Maryland. Please introduce yourselves.
Speaker 7:Hello, I'm Coach Carly, coach Beverly.
Speaker 1:Coach Beverly, How's it going All right? So we were supposed to have counties.
Speaker 7:Yes.
Speaker 1:This past week but didn't happen. Yeah, got delayed. Yeah, when are we set to do it now?
Speaker 11:Monday Monday At Chesapeake High School.
Speaker 1:At Chesapeake High School, yep. What are we thinking?
Speaker 7:The girls are looking good. They're really trying. We had a great full out this last practice and we have our warm-up comp at Spalding tomorrow and then back in on Monday for counties. Now.
Speaker 1:Spalding on tomorrow and then back in on Monday for counties. Now wait a minute. Would you have had the Spalding thing if the county thing was happening this week? You would have done it anyway just to prep for the next thing, for regionals. Knock on wood. All right, knock on wood, but now it's good, because now you get like a whole other thing to do before we go to counties.
Speaker 7:Yeah, because the Ken Island Invitational got canceled.
Speaker 1:So we only ended up with our competition.
Speaker 7:That was it yeah, before counties I enjoyed the competition. It's always a great time, it is.
Speaker 1:I've only been to your competition, but I tend to think your competition is better than all the other competitions. Is that true?
Speaker 11:I mean, I don't think we're better. We run a very well comp. We're very organized. No, I think it's very organized, maybe a little OCD.
Speaker 1:I think it's extremely well organized. Anybody who's never come out to one of these has to. Yes, because if nothing, else you sit there and you listen to really loud music.
Speaker 7:Yeah.
Speaker 1:And I kind of enjoy that.
Speaker 7:There's a lot of talent and a lot of great teams that come and it's good to see some of the Inter-Royal County poor counties.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and I do have to apologize to Severn Run, who we play basketball to, but that's not my fault. This is their first year.
Speaker 11:I kept saying Severna Run, but it's Severn Run.
Speaker 1:I don't usually make mistakes like that, but they threw me off. And then the Wolves. They're bright orange.
Speaker 11:Well, they just are standing out.
Speaker 1:They are standing out.
Speaker 11:They are. It's very exciting for them.
Speaker 1:All right, they are standing out, they are. It's very exciting for them. All right, so tell me about this year's squad.
Speaker 11:I mean we're crushing it. I mean we're doing as best we possibly can. I mean winter season's winter season what?
Speaker 8:does that mean?
Speaker 11:So you deal with a lot of illnesses throughout the schools and missed practices and not full team practices, which we know is difficult in cheer world. Yes, you have four basketball teams, you have wrestling, so getting into the main gym to practice is very tough to get into, so we squeeze any time we can. So winter is always harder, but we get through it and we'll be fine.
Speaker 7:You're going to be fine. Yeah, we're soaking up the next like three weeks, especially with our seniors.
Speaker 1:Yeah, this is it.
Speaker 7:For four years, so it's yeah.
Speaker 1:This is it right. You're done after this season. You don't do like a third season in a row. No, we don't.
Speaker 11:No, I mean and they're exhausted.
Speaker 5:Yeah.
Speaker 11:Their bodies are just tired.
Speaker 1:I mean tonight here for the big game. This is going to be fun. This is going to be a packed house tonight. I think we're going to destroy Severn Run, but that's just my opinion I'm putting it out there before it actually happens.
Speaker 11:You manifest it, I'm going to manifest it. And we'll be back here at 7.15 to get ready to go to the Spalding AM.
Speaker 5:Good that's good, that's what you need to be doing.
Speaker 1:Alright, tell people about counties. Can they still get tickets? What times it start?
Speaker 11:Tickets are sold out. Sold out. They've been sold out for days. Yep, wow.
Speaker 1:Sold out.
Speaker 11:At Chesapeake High.
Speaker 1:All right, and what any do we want to talk about where we think we could place.
Speaker 11:We're always hoping for top three top five. I mean it's Anne Arundel County so Shoot for number one. Well, let's go for number one, I mean that would be great. Yeah, but we also respect the talent that's in Anne Arundel County.
Speaker 1:All right. And how about this? Because I've learned this now. What is your? I don't know what the number is called, but the max that you can get Are you allowed to talk about that, 120.
Speaker 11:So 120.
Speaker 7:So do we have a difficult thing. We're doing Diffic closer to being maxed out, completely under difficulty, and it comes down to technique, all technique. I think the most exciting part, though, for us as a program is our JB competing for the first time in over a year. Those coaches have taken girls that have never cheered before a day in their lives and they actually look amazing and they are ready, excited, for counties.
Speaker 1:They looked very good at the South River showdown yeah, they did.
Speaker 11:I think only one girl has cheered before. That's it, or one or two, but that's it.
Speaker 1:That's kind of amazing. Those JV coaches better coach them up because you get them there.
Speaker 7:They're doing great the team's doing great.
Speaker 11:The coaches are doing great.
Speaker 1:It was a good start.
Speaker 11:Number one Shoot for number one on.
Speaker 1:Monday for number one Absolutely On Monday night.
Speaker 11:Yes, monday night.
Speaker 1:I love. It All right, good luck.
Speaker 11:Thank you very much.
Speaker 1:Boom, that's our South River cheer team coaches. Let's do it. All right, andy. All right, we got some more people at the table here. Introduce us here. All right, buddy, they're the legends man.
Speaker 2:They're Mr and Mr Woodland Beats. So the gentleman to my right, tom. I played ball with him when we used to play at the Edgewater little what was it called Edgewater down there across from Adams London Town Public House. He was the coach. I think we were seven years old, so we got Tom Rose and Steve Rose, aka Moose Moose.
Speaker 1:Oh, I've heard about you, Moose. Oh, I've heard some stories. Yes, I have, and I'll tell you they ran the gamut really.
Speaker 2:I'm going to tell you. So, tom and I he lived on the same street. Up the road Mom made the best one thing about his mom made the best cheese toast ever. That's what we ate cheese toast, before every game. But I've had the pleasure of playing with Tom since 7-year-old. And then he surpassed me, he went and played college ball, and Moose was my first coach and coached all the way up until he, when we grew up, he became the high school coach too. So he coaches in baseball. Oh okay, high school assistant in baseball. Oh okay, high school assistant. You got the legends here, we got some legends here.
Speaker 1:All right. So you got to tell us what you're up to right now. Now you're a former coach. Now you went on to coach at many different places.
Speaker 4:Yeah, several places.
Speaker 4:All right tell us about this. So I left here, then went and played for the community college, left here, then went and played for the community college, played basketball there for two years and transferred to Goucher where I played for two years and after that I was fortunate because my community college coach was Mark Amatucci. He went to Calvert Hall after that. So I worked there for two years, then went back to Goucher, was an assistant. Then I was a head coach at Our Lady Mount Carmel High School for 13 years. We had a lot of success there. Then moved over to Goucher, was there for eight years, kind of stepped away from that.
Speaker 1:Now I'm a special education math teacher at Dundalk High.
Speaker 4:School up in Baltimore. What years did you coach at Goucher? So let's see Grace 2015-16 up until two years ago.
Speaker 1:Oh, so very recently.
Speaker 4:Yeah, yep.
Speaker 1:Okay, so you're familiar with Coach.
Speaker 4:Curley. I am familiar with Coach Curley. Yeah, we had some pretty good games up there.
Speaker 1:All right, Now I played basketball with Coach Curley back in the day. And now he's a Juniata and I'll be heading up there tomorrow actually.
Speaker 6:Yeah, he's done a nice job up there. He's got a nice gig going.
Speaker 1:He's been there for 23 years now. Yeah, something like that. Yeah, alright. And then you, sir Moose, yes, sir, what are you up to now? Not just retired now and just enjoying it Watching TV? Do you get out to many of the games? Nah, this is my first one. First one, basketball. Yeah, alright. Now have you guys been following this team? I've been following this team. I've been following a little bit. I mean, they seem to be doing pretty well. So, yeah, we're ranked in the area and it's really good. We just had a guy on he's the jv coach assistant right on the varsity, who just made a, made a big statement. He said this team is the best team he's ever seen at south river.
Speaker 1:Wow, that's a pretty big statement yeah, that is all right, tell me about your teams when you were playing here.
Speaker 4:When I played here, we weren't very good Okay so we're not even in comparison.
Speaker 4:We were competitive, you know, but we just didn't have all the pieces that we needed. Yeah, I mean, back then Annapolis was just a big power. I mean they were winning state championships consistently. So the county was talented, meade was very good, um, and you know, we just they were just a different caliber. I mean it was a lot better when I went to community college and played with some of those guys realizing, you know, a lot more fun, a lot we were playing with them, I guess, yeah, yeah yeah so yeah, but I mean, you know andy sells himself short a little bit.
Speaker 4:He was a really good athlete when we were growing up. Um, you know, it's cool because we played everything together. I mean, we played baseball, we played basketball, um, you know, I used to. He was a great pitcher. I used to be the catcher for him. Um, you know basketball, we were kind of twin towers. We were in elementary school and then he grew a little bit and I didn't grow for a long time and then finally I did grow. Um, but it was cool. His mom was really involved with what we did.
Speaker 4:And then you know, I call him Steve, but everybody knows him as Moose. He coached us to be. He used to throw us all in the van. I remember that was one of the things pick everybody up.
Speaker 2:You know he coached us in everything, so we're better people because of it yeah, I don't know how he coached for so many years because not only it was the light blue van and a lot of us. He would pick everybody up in the van, We'd go play, but before we'd play back then you had a $50 steak and egg and cheese biscuits. He'd take us to lunch. He was the guy and I'll never forget. My freshman year I got cut trying out for basketball. We didn't have AAU or do any of that.
Speaker 2:I remember Tom seeing me in school. He's like, dude, come over. And I walked up to McRodan. It was snowing in November and we would take these snowballs and we would stand back and we would try to hit his backboard. And he's like if you could hit a backboard with this snowball, you could put the ball in the hoop. And he was. You don't know it and I never had a chance to tell him, but he pushed me and I made it. Remember we moved varsity, our sophomore year.
Speaker 1:That's fantastic. So what's it mean for you guys? I mean alumni night, what's that mean to come back? I mean, this thing goes back a lot of years.
Speaker 4:Oh yeah, definitely For me. I think it's different than him. I mean, he's got a long history here. For me to come back and just see it and see how different it is, but also to walk the halls and feel how nostalgic it is. It's always cool, because when you're walking, the halls it's probably not that much different.
Speaker 4:It's not that much different, you know, but it's. You know. It's one of those things when you always go back to a place you were, it doesn't seem as big as it was when you were there. Yeah, you know how gigantic, but I mean it's still. It's cool. You just memories come back to you and you get to see people that, um, you share memories with. So that's always cool about that, yeah, for sure. But he's, you know, he's got a long history here. I mean it's, it's cool. Mean people know him, you know, by Moose. It's funny, you know, it's just amazing, it's good.
Speaker 1:So, Moose, tell us about, I mean, what were some of your favorite memories here, some of your best teams.
Speaker 5:Well, I started coaching baseball in 89. Then I went to girls basketball in the year 81, or I mean 91 or 92. I forget, or 81, or I mean 91 or 92. I forget, but I mean, and then I quit or stopped, like in 2020.
Speaker 1:Yeah, so you were coaching up until 2020.
Speaker 5:So, you're not that far from being removed. Yeah, nah, I think I coached baseball until 21. Yeah, I think it's fun. I mean they're good Good kids, a lot of bad teams, but I mean they were good Good kids, a lot of bad teams, but I mean mostly good teams. One time we went 0-20, and then next year we were 15-5.
Speaker 1:That's coaching right there.
Speaker 5:Yeah, that's what I said. Yeah, but you know, we had good people, had a good person in front of me, coach Dunn. I've heard a lot of stories about Coach Dunn. Tim Poole was the coach of basketball for one time and a couple other guys. They had a good team when Darren was, I think, a sophomore, darren Hall the coach yeah, he would have been a sophomore. Yeah, I think he had a good team with Al Lee, who was just an amazing person. Yeah, an amazing basketball player and baseball player.
Speaker 1:Yeah, we've heard a lot about Coach Hall's team back in the day.
Speaker 5:That's probably the best I can remember.
Speaker 1:That's the best one you remember.
Speaker 5:Yeah, there's some that should have been better, but just never gelled or anything.
Speaker 1:Yeah, all right. Well, hey, we appreciate you guys being here. Let's get a big win. Let's go watch a big win.
Speaker 2:Let's go watch it. Go Waterland Beach, baby Waterland Beach.
Speaker 7:Appreciate you having us All right.
Speaker 4:Thank you, sir Yep. Thank you.
Speaker 1:All right, we are now joined by the girls' varsity coach, Coach Zivic coming right off the court right into here. Post-game interview. I don't even know the final score 62-22. 62-22? Yes, All right, so we had a running clock at the end. I take it All right. Who were the big scorers? Give us a lowdown.
Speaker 12:Burke had 13. Hawkins had 11. Oval had 8. Skyler had 8, West at 7, and then we had a couple people at 4, 2, and 1 sprinkled in there.
Speaker 1:All right. So you've got to tell me here let's talk about the early season. We haven't talked all season.
Speaker 12:No no we haven't.
Speaker 1:I've been waiting for you.
Speaker 12:Hey, you know my number.
Speaker 1:I feel like you've been ducking me a little bit. No no, no, we had some early season stumbles, but you're back up and running.
Speaker 12:Tell me about the season so far, I wouldn't call them stumbles. They're learning experiences. Okay, and we played really good teams, yeah, and the thing would I have liked to come out on top of all of them? Yes. Would I have liked to come out on top of at least one of them? Yes, but that being said, we played them good teams, and we represented South River. There was no blowouts. We were there. I think the biggest loss was seven.
Speaker 8:Dude, we were in every game.
Speaker 12:Yeah, we were in every game, yeah.
Speaker 1:And so what can we expect? Moving forward here? You expect moving forward here. You're on a little bit of a run right now. You're in the county, though, so a little different.
Speaker 12:Yes, it is a little different. We're doing what we're supposed to do. We're a good team. We're supposed to beat teams because we're just better than that. There's no way around it, yeah.
Speaker 1:We're at Alumni Night. We've got all the boys team coming in here. Now what does Alumni Night mean for you and for the program? I mean you're growing something here.
Speaker 12:It's awesome. I still talk to some of my players like friends on Facebook. You know the book face always a good place and you know it's awesome. I've been here for a while. I wasn't from here, but I feel like I am a Seahawk through and through. You know I didn't go up through the ranks but I've been here, I've put a lot of time in and you know I'm proud of what the kids have come through here and that's the biggest thing.
Speaker 12:I mean these kids now are doctors, some of them are engineers, of them are work for the uh, capital police. You know they have new careers. Some of our certain families, I mean it really is awesome to see that kind of stuff. I mean I had the pleasure to coach a couple of them, their kids, at a camp this summer, so just things like that like coming full circle.
Speaker 1:Yeah, that is cool, that is very cool. Well, coach, we need to have you on again. We need to have a full show with all that goes through Coach Jivic's head.
Speaker 6:You don't want that.
Speaker 1:As we continue on A good win right here, who do you got next? Chesapeake, chesapeake. That's going to be a good one, though, right or not?
Speaker 12:We're going to take care of business, you're going to take care of business.
Speaker 1:All right Coach.
Speaker 2:You know, I wanted to say something to Zivic. He doesn't know it, but when I because when I went to school here Zivic wasn't here. Yeah, I come back nike herndon's oldest daughter, chance. But and when I walked into the gym I was late and I'll it, it was halftime, so it wasn't a buzzer beater, but it was a halftime before they go in half court shot and I watched the express and on coach, I was like man, I've never met him. It's pretty cool. Now she's the jb coach, coaching for the varsity coach, so it's a pretty special thing it's a pretty funny.
Speaker 4:You remember that, don't you?
Speaker 12:yeah, I mean I, you know I'm lucky to have them chance. Savannah, you know they came through, they know what to expect. They're doing a great job with our JV one county right now the only undefeated team.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I love it.
Speaker 12:I love it too, the county champions last year. They're gonna try to defend it again this year. That's fantastic, I'm pumped for them yeah.
Speaker 1:All right, Coach Okay.
Speaker 12:Go get something to eat. Oh, I'm starving.
Speaker 1:We're going to get you back on, okay, because we're going to go for a stretch run here. I still feel special things on this team. Okay, I agree All right.
Speaker 2:All right, andy, who we got now. We got it. We got it. We got Mr Zandy Baldwin, tom Bresnahan with us right now. And I tell you, growing up at Wollongong Beach, I remember Moose said when I walked down to the beach I had to pass his house and his house, and every time we did we wouldn't go by him unless we give me the football. So these are the guys I was telling you to help make me who I am.
Speaker 1:All right. So you got it All right. Guys, first you got to tell me what you're up to now and what year did you graduate 83,.
Speaker 6:both of us 83.
Speaker 1:All right. What are we up to now? We both still live here.
Speaker 6:Oh yeah, I have four daughters. You go Got a bunch of grandkids that'll probably come here.
Speaker 1:So you are a South River in and through.
Speaker 6:Yeah, Been here since 75.
Speaker 1:Outstanding.
Speaker 5:I've had three to graduate from here.
Speaker 1:All right.
Speaker 5:I live in Selby.
Speaker 1:All right, so I need to know a little bit about your teams. How are your teams coming through here? I'm seeing pictures all night. I think I saw your team up there.
Speaker 6:We were up in there. Me and Danny grew up together in elementary and all the way through, and what we did back in the day was compete. We competed against each other, Our friends. We had a friend group of just ballers and no matter what sport we were doing, it could be football on the street, basketball, any playground. Like Andy said, we'd walk by somebody's house, just you know.
Speaker 5:Let's go, let's go Pick up D.
Speaker 6:Yeah, and somebody was getting bloody or hurt, busted up. But you know what, we got in the same car and we were buddies and that was it. After the game, the practices, we were hung out together. It was tight-knit. We had a tight-knit knit and that's what made us good. Yeah, camaraderie we had with our sport. He, he played the same sports I did, except for I was a baseball guy and he was a lacrosse guy. We both played football and basketball, so three sports. But uh, we, I was there for him in lacrosse and he was there for us in baseball, that kind of stuff was what.
Speaker 1:What got us going all right, so tell me some of your favorite memories.
Speaker 5:Well, I guess basketball-wise would be first team to beat Southern Boys at. Southern. They came down to beat our butts, but we went down there and beat them.
Speaker 4:They were a good team.
Speaker 1:Did they still have that little tiny gym?
Speaker 6:I guess that gym's done changed. All of us stand in the room, only you stand behind the baskets back then.
Speaker 5:And I think in 83, we it was the 82 season, but yeah, that was the 82 season but 83 season. We still hold the best record for the school at 18 and 5.
Speaker 6:Which might be broken this year.
Speaker 1:So you were 18 and 5, and that's the best record ever.
Speaker 6:Uh-huh.
Speaker 1:Oh, that could be in jeopardy this year what? Are we sitting at right now?
Speaker 5:I think last year, two years ago, what 18-6? Or last year 18-6.
Speaker 6:We were talking on the coattails.
Speaker 5:Oh yeah.
Speaker 6:And we were talking about it, then too, Like you know, it doesn't, we don't mind seeing it. We like the talk with South River. You read the paper You're getting out there on social media? I want to hear it.
Speaker 1:I want to see it, so it doesn't bother us, and maybe you'll start listening to the podcast now.
Speaker 6:Yeah, I've got to get into that.
Speaker 1:Yes, you do so. Wow, I didn't realize that we're chasing a record here right now. Now we had somebody on earlier. I'm just going to keep saying this because he made a bold statement and he said best team ever at South River is the guys who are about to take the court, and they have a lot to prove yet.
Speaker 6:But what do you think of that statement? Well, watching a couple games, I'm going to say they got a good 15 kids, 12 that can play.
Speaker 5:Yeah.
Speaker 6:We kind of had that too. We had size, A couple of size. The game was a little different then. I can see we spread the floor now a lot more than we ever did.
Speaker 5:They're shooting behind the point line Constantly.
Speaker 6:We were more set up in plays and running through the post. Sometimes he was our point, so we ran through him too. So, I was just a bench player by a chance. I'm just an off-the-bench hustle guy, you know.
Speaker 2:Well, the cool thing is, if I could add, you know you've got Coach Hall who's coaching you, who did wonderful things. But when I came up, we played at Edgewater Elementary we played here. These guys were the scorekeepers. They flipped that quarter Elementary. We played here. These guys were the scorekeepers. They'd flip that card up Anytime I'd do something wrong. Them guys would come over to me especially. I remember Danny going no, no man, you've got to turn around and do this. And then Tommy would get me in the second half. So collectively, these older guys would help shape us. So it's just a pyramid. Now, these guys, they can't do the hard because they got them, they got them, they got me. So they're almost bulletproof and they listen. Well, but it all started right here.
Speaker 6:Y'all the first team 79 was the first year we got together. Yeah, 79, 80, well, I wasn't on the team. Then I got cut my JV year and then made varsity 10th grade. So that's kind of weird, but yeah, it was the first year. We were one of the first full years, full years.
Speaker 1:And still hold the record for wins.
Speaker 6:Yeah, we had a good group. Like I said, it was tough and I think to go back to this group here today, a lot of it has to do with good parenting, if these kids are listening and doing the right thing, good coach too. Darren's a good guy. I'm glad we got him. I used to come up here and watch him play. When he was playing, I'd be in the stands watching him yelling and hooping and hollering. I'm a yeller.
Speaker 1:So what do you think about alumni? I mean, I like this. This is a fun thing. I want to see more people out here.
Speaker 6:Yeah, it would be great to see more Once we I think next year maybe we get it to where we get more time to set it up. Yeah, you know, because I just found out this week.
Speaker 1:I've been saying, maybe a Saturday, yeah, maybe.
Speaker 3:Yeah, maybe a Saturday afternoon game.
Speaker 1:Do something a little bit before the game or after the game, one or the other or both.
Speaker 6:Yeah, it's a good thing, no matter what. Yeah.
Speaker 1:It's great. It's great to see so many people, and so many people care about this community and are still part of it and still have kids that have all come right through South River.
Speaker 2:Yep, yeah, doing different things, but we're still here, you know, and his wife, Danny's wife's, right over there looking at the thing she came through here Big softball yeah and we tried to get her on, she wouldn't come over. Well they're back in the year. That's all right. That's all right All right fellas.
Speaker 1:Thank you, I appreciate it.
Speaker 6:Appreciate. You Enjoyed the game. Danny was the athlete of the year in 83.
Speaker 1:Athlete of the year in 1983.
Speaker 6:That dude could do it all. If somebody I looked up to as an athlete, I prided myself on trying to be the best in everything Hard, it was him. I followed him. He was the man.
Speaker 5:I like it.
Speaker 6:I appreciate that, john, you can play any sport. Yeah, don't matter, doesn't matter. It didn't matter then, it don't matter, now you can play anything.
Speaker 2:I remember you know like my dad would make my uh bounce back goals out of conduit electrical safe. I'll never forget. I walked by and danny was taking his lacrosse ball off of this tree a round tree and it kept coming back so yeah, how hard that is so he figured it out that kind of way and I was always inspired to you. I appreciate that. Good job, bud yeah.
Speaker 1:All right let's get a win. Yes sir, and then I'm kind of rooting for the record to be broken.
Speaker 6:We'll win tonight. We'll win tonight and I want to beat the Smyrna Parks and the Frog Nacks.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I do too. I do too. All right, we got a good one coming up, good deal, thank you guys Appreciate it. All right, andy, we might have my two favorite coaches of any coaches at Toss River. I'm saying it right now that's such a compliment. I know I've been talking about you guys the whole time because you are the only undefeated basketball team left. I'm not trying to put too much pressure on you.
Speaker 10:I was going to say can you knock on wood Knock on wood.
Speaker 1:Pretty good season, so far right.
Speaker 10:Yeah, yes.
Speaker 1:Alright, we're here talking about basketball, we're here talking about the coaches, but we're also talking about alumni and you are all three.
Speaker 10:Yes, yeah, alright, what year?
Speaker 1:Tell us your year that you graduated. Did you both play for Coach Simmons?
Speaker 10:We did yeah.
Speaker 8:Man, he's been here for that long.
Speaker 1:Not when I should have said that.
Speaker 10:All right, what year I graduated? In 2016.
Speaker 1:2016.
Speaker 10:I graduated in 2015. In 2015.
Speaker 1:All right, and what are we thinking? How's the year going? Let's talk about your team first.
Speaker 10:I think it's going's going great, I mean the nice part is we're so deep yeah and we have a lot of games coming up. Next week we have four games, and so I think you do have four games.
Speaker 1:That's kind of crazy, it's a crazy week is that all just because of cancellations and all that?
Speaker 10:yes, no games and then also because two teams don't have a jv team, we had to schedule an out of county game. So that's where the like where the John Carroll Friday game comes into play.
Speaker 1:So we don't really know what are we expecting, what teams are we looking out for?
Speaker 10:I think John Carroll and Polly should both be good games.
Speaker 7:They should be good games.
Speaker 10:Chesapeake should be good as well. They're undefeated right now.
Speaker 1:No, go ahead.
Speaker 2:Well, before we go any farther, I don't even know that we really asked who we're interviewing.
Speaker 1:I just told him my name because I told him that my two favorite coaches.
Speaker 2:Do a proper introduction. Well, the reason I'm sitting here thinking we've got to stop a little bit, because you call them coaches.
Speaker 1:Yeah, what do you call them?
Speaker 2:Well, a friend would even not do this justice. So Chance and Savannah Herndon yeah, what do you call them? Well, a friend would even not do this justice. So Chance and Savannah Herndon.
Speaker 1:Yes, the Herndon royalty.
Speaker 2:So Cash was a. He didn't even come. These are the Herndon girls that I had the pleasure of hanging out with the parents to come watch play here and, like I was telling you when you were interviewing Zivic, I was was late came in the gym. It was halftime. Savannah he'd won up from half court and it went in and I watched that emotion and the coach was celebrating to be able to see did you guys remember this. Yeah, she did all right and they both went on to play at the same college.
Speaker 2:Yes, I had the privilege Sunday to go to the biggest, coolest baby shower ever Because, as you can tell, tess is probably two weeks away from having another baby.
Speaker 10:Hey, I guess February 14th you did.
Speaker 1:It's that close.
Speaker 10:I'm five weeks away technically, but I don't know.
Speaker 1:The last time we talked you said that you had planned it. So counties are like the day before or something like that the county should be just a week to the date before my due date.
Speaker 10:So we'll see. My goal is to make it. I mean.
Speaker 1:All right, worst case scenario, I can step in.
Speaker 10:Yeah, okay, perfect, I All right. Worst case scenario I can step in.
Speaker 1:Yeah, okay, perfect, I'm ready to step in.
Speaker 10:I told her I was like I don't know if I can stand up. The last time I stood up was when Cash was playing.
Speaker 1:Oh, no, no, I don't stand up. You have to stand up. Oh gosh, I like to just sit on the bench because I like to get a seat better, that's all I like.
Speaker 10:The last time I stood up was league at wise and they needed me to stand up and coach them and I got a technical and almost got ejected so she's in the hospital.
Speaker 1:You get thrown out all of a sudden.
Speaker 10:I'm the coach there you go I can do it first county championship under your belt. How was?
Speaker 2:how cool would that be I'll tell you the story one of the one of the coolest things that they bring to the table they've actually are doing now. They're both teachers. You're a teacher, she's a teacher Harwood.
Speaker 8:We'll get you here eventually.
Speaker 10:I try every year.
Speaker 8:Really.
Speaker 10:I really like it there. I do, I do Really, I do, I really really enjoy the people, I'm a good recruiter but she's more. They try Well the enjoy the people. I'm a good recruiter but she's warm.
Speaker 2:She is. They try. Well, the talk would be as fast as a ball in a podcast session. Is that you girls are like? All you want is still on the feet.
Speaker 8:Yeah.
Speaker 10:It's amazing. You guys are great we had last year. Our girls are great. We have so much fun with them. We were talking about it the other day. We fun with them. We were talking about it the other day. We haven't had the opportunity to practice in a while, just because of games and snow and everything I miss practicing with them. I miss having those moments where we see them get better. It's awesome. I do too. Seeing their progress over practice is crazy.
Speaker 10:They've really improved this year, jv teams especially, you get to see such a progression throughout the season. It's awesome.
Speaker 1:Yeah, it is awesome and you guys have a hard job. Jv coaches are that's a tough job the best players they steal from you and then you've got to get them ready, in essence, to become there. But you've done a good job because look at this team, this team's been progressively getting better. The varsity, the JV hey man, we got a lot of good years in front of us.
Speaker 10:There's a lot of good players coming up.
Speaker 1:It's so exciting, yeah, all right. So what do you think? Give us your insight on the varsity team. They just got a win. They're on a little bit of a run here.
Speaker 10:Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1:How far can they go?
Speaker 10:I think I mean really far, especially in playoffs, like Especially in playoffs, like I definitely see another repeat county championship.
Speaker 1:Oh, that would be nice.
Speaker 10:That would be so nice. I think it's in their court Like they get to determine it. I think that we will win our region that is something we haven't done since the 80s, I believe, is that right, I think 82. Don't quote me, wow, it's been since the 80s. But I feel like, especially because we played those harder teams early on, our record does not reflect how good we really are.
Speaker 1:I would agree.
Speaker 10:So I think it was. We lost five games by a total of 21 points.
Speaker 1:And so we had a lot of close ones. So Civic was just on here saying all that.
Speaker 10:But I also think that benefited us because we had those moments of actual game time practice when the score was close. So when the score is close in playoffs we're going to have those moments of actual game time practice when the score was close. So when the score is close in playoffs, we're going to have those moments and we're back on.
Speaker 1:I agree, I agree. And then the other theme of tonight has been we had one of the your JV coach from the boys made a big statement and I have to keep bringing this up because he made a big statement. He said that this current varsity boys team is the best team that he's ever seen at South River. What do you say, having you've seen a lot of teams come through and they got a lot to prove, yet because we're not through with the season yet, yes.
Speaker 1:Where do you, what do you think of this boys varsity?
Speaker 10:team. I love the way this boys varsity team plays. I think that they always have someone who can score. Even if someone's having an off night, it doesn't matter, someone else will step up. But I have to be biased. I have to say that Cash's senior year was the best boys varsity team that we've seen here. I was going to say the same thing. I think Cash's senior year is a hard one to beat.
Speaker 10:But I will say this team always finds a way to win. They always find a way to win, which is an amazing trait to have.
Speaker 1:Yeah, now Cash, if you're listening, there's been a lot of debate about this. I did also discover I didn't know this was it 1983? 1983. 1983 still has the best, the most wins. No, the best record it's 1883 still has the best, the most wins, no, the best record in the history, and I guess Cash's team tied it but had one more loss, yes, so they still hold the record, but they're sweating a little bit with these guys. I can imagine because this is a good team.
Speaker 10:I mean they have a good record to start the season.
Speaker 1:All right, end it with this. You have four games next week.
Speaker 10:Four games.
Speaker 1:Give us the rundown.
Speaker 10:So Tuesday we play Chesapeake.
Speaker 1:That's going to be a good one, right. Good win 10-1, 8-1, somewhere in that number.
Speaker 10:I think your JV's undefeated right now, so it should be a good game, I think.
Speaker 1:I just checked it out they're 8-1. They have one loss. Who it was to, though?
Speaker 10:I can't remember either.
Speaker 1:Yeah, but you never know these websites and I'll take a break. So maybe they were defeated, I don't know True.
Speaker 10:I know that varsity was undefeated until recently.
Speaker 1:Is this a new thing that Chesapeake basketball has been good?
Speaker 10:Yeah, also. They haven't gotten to the bulk of their schedule yet. So I think here, at the end, we're going to yeah.
Speaker 11:All right.
Speaker 10:I might fluctuate a little bit. Yeah, and then Thursday's Crofton.
Speaker 1:Okay, I'd like to beat Crofton Me too, All right, if I can just put a request in. Pound me Like, beat him by like 80. So when?
Speaker 10:Chance says pull the press off, do not.
Speaker 1:I'm going to be players in the past, hey.
Speaker 10:I will take any excuse to keep the press on. Keep the press.
Speaker 1:I actually love when you guys keep it. That's probably a bad thing to say, but I love when we keep the press on.
Speaker 10:She tries, she would do it the entire game. I would.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I hate that running clock too.
Speaker 10:Yeah, it goes so quick. It's up and there's two minutes left.
Speaker 1:It's like I understand, I understand All right, crofton.
Speaker 10:And then Friday John Carroll, okay, and then Saturday is Pauly.
Speaker 1:Are both Friday, saturday, here.
Speaker 10:Friday's away.
Speaker 1:Friday's away.
Speaker 10:It's four o'clock, so we have to leave school early, all of the things.
Speaker 1:Players like it, parents not so much.
Speaker 10:Yeah, all right, and then probably Saturday at home at 10.
Speaker 1:Okay, I'm okay with that.
Speaker 10:Yeah, we can work with that, not too, early, not too early, yeah.
Speaker 1:All right. So come out and watch this JV team, because they're doing something special. We're going to go back. We're going to try to get back-to-back county championships.
Speaker 10:Back-to-back county championships.
Speaker 1:That's the plan, you guys should be walking around the school there. Yep, we got there. Thank you both. Thank you for having us. We're going to go watch a big game, Yep big game and we're going to see if this team does better than Cassius did.
Speaker 10:We'll see Alright, thank you, thank you.
Speaker 1:We got another player here with us.
Speaker 2:We gotta introduce yourself.
Speaker 1:Alright, you gotta introduce yourself and your year.
Speaker 9:Russell Thung 95 graduating 95, Russell. I like it.
Speaker 1:I like it how you doing.
Speaker 9:All right.
Speaker 1:All right.
Speaker 9:Come to see a good game. Support my old teammate, great coach, that's right because you played with Darren right.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I remember we talked last year. You're a returner. You're a return guest on the show. Thank you for coming back again. What's it mean for you to come out each and every year?
Speaker 9:You're here for alumni, love the sport. Would like to come to more games, but probably support more when I live in Pasadena, so probably support when you're playing off the roads for some road games.
Speaker 1:So tell us about your teams.
Speaker 9:You played on some good teams here, definitely Freshman year, playing with Allie I think Darren was a sophomore then, yeah, and Allie Ebony Hicks Darren was still a man then also, but we had a great team then. Corey Davis, one of my best friends, yeah, had a lot of nice talent on that spot. Rob Randall.
Speaker 1:And what year was this? What's your best team that you went through here with?
Speaker 9:I would say the best team. I don't know about the best record, but my freshman year with Allie and Hicks and Darren I guess my junior year, darren and Rob's senior year was a good year too. Well, my sophomore year.
Speaker 1:Because our debate tonight has been what is the best team to ever come through South River.
Speaker 9:I mean, I look at that being like I'm not sure if you guys are Cowboys fans.
Speaker 1:We are definitely not Cowboys fans, especially on the eve of the Commanders game.
Speaker 9:I just didn't want to be disrespectful. Emmitt Smith is considered one of the greatest running backs because of stats, yes, but I still put Bo Jackson and Walter Payton and all those guys over him, okay, okay, okay Okay. So the record might not show, but I put teams that I played against. There's a lot of teams in our history here, all right. So who? Vardy and them also had a great squad and they were like a foundation for it.
Speaker 1:So you still got to give me the answer, though. What, in your opinion, is the best team, regardless of record, that has ever stepped foot on that court at South?
Speaker 9:River. I would say my freshman year, your freshman year, yeah, my freshman year.
Speaker 1:You'd go up against anybody.
Speaker 9:I was just a defensive player on that team but like I looked at Howley Corey Davis, like I said at Allie Corey Davis, like I said, one of my best friends. He's also a great guard as well. We had depth. We had bench Fred Goodson, we had a lot of depth.
Speaker 2:He was a bolster on us, yeah definitely I'll tell you another one. See, each person we interview is pretty cool, but I walked in. He says he's from Pasadena. Yeah, I ended up coaching some little ones and we were invited to go to this tournament and everybody. So we see these kids warming up and I didn't see the coach yet and everybody's sweating. He's a group of kids and the coach called out and I look over at his head and I'm thinking to myself he gives back and I'll tell you.
Speaker 2:they smoked us and we were undefeated right around this area. We went to Pasadena. I said that's all you're going to learn is by losing anybody can win and just go to Tasty Freeze and have ice cream. When you lose, you go to the grind. He put water on me so bad man. I still remember.
Speaker 9:He's still in pain for that. Once we got older, he got his get back.
Speaker 5:He got his get back.
Speaker 2:And it's a pleasure to always see you with the kids and I remember because I graduated in 1989, and I remember coming back and sitting in the stands and watching this group and I got to tell you stats is what's driving this team, team, but the heart that team he had with them guys, they had to know they had some heart, they had some heart yeah, kenny dumb will tell you the same thing. Yeah, he, uh, you know fred's over there at the green turtle working this young man. They had some heart yeah they did.
Speaker 1:So what do do you think about the team that your old teammate is building here and the program that he's putting together here?
Speaker 9:at.
Speaker 1:South River.
Speaker 9:Definitely it's through the roof, like he's doing a great job and like the guys are always buying into the system. When I played, we could say everybody bought into Mr Dunn's system, but not everybody. Some people had their own agenda and stuff. But he did a great job of blending a lot of, I guess, different egos and stuff like that. I just always looked at myself as a football player, not a basketball player. I love to dunk.
Speaker 9:I'd take two or three dunks over 20 points any day, just to get the crowd hype Just to get the crowd hype yeah and be a defensive player. We need a little bit of just to get the crowd hyped, just to get the crowd hyped, yeah, and be a defensive player yeah.
Speaker 1:We need a little bit of that.
Speaker 2:We need a little bit of that right now. We've had Jaden a couple times there. We do it. Yeah, his dunk is spectacular. I'll never forget the dunk he did at 90. Just dunking was never back hit, he dunked it. I mean to tell you the way he came into this game.
Speaker 1:Yeah, we got to get loud tonight. We got another big one tonight. They are chasing some stats right here. This team could be the best, the most winning team in the history of South River. We're sitting at what? 13-1?
Speaker 2:13-1, but we're 13-1 at one of the highest level tournaments.
Speaker 1:Oh, I know, I know that was fantastic. I couldn't believe it.
Speaker 2:I didn't have to work but to get on the TV at night to see them guys winning against the guys.
Speaker 1:Against teams from all over the country.
Speaker 2:Yeah, oh man, it was breathtaking.
Speaker 1:It was exciting.
Speaker 2:So it's big? Yeah, it's big league.
Speaker 1:Yeah, it's big league. We got a big one tonight. I think we're going to beat them pretty bad, but we'll see Hopefully.
Speaker 2:We're going to remain humble. We're going to eat your mouth.
Speaker 1:You need to remain humble? I don't need to. I'm the guy on the podcast. I can say whatever. I want to say there we go.
Speaker 3:Thank you for coming out again, always a pleasure to see Every alumni game.
Speaker 1:That's awesome. Appreciate it and let's go get another win. Let's watch this team play.
Speaker 9:Definitely All right. Thank you, sir. Guys, have a good day. All right, you too.
Speaker 2:All righty. Well, tom, I have the privilege of introducing you to the mascot. When I played, he was the mascot for us. The mascot, yes, this is the one and only Craig Drucker.
Speaker 1:Craig, welcome to Hock Talk. Thank you for being here.
Speaker 2:So, craig, when I graduated, you were one of the ones. I just was like I'm going to miss him because he's a plethora of knowledge. He knows stats from everything. Well, now Craig is a big fish working at Safeway, so I have the pleasure to see him. Every time I go to the grocery store he emails me. Every game can tell you anything, but Craig is here. Craig, you were very valuable with everything that you brought, which I think we got a question going out there what do you think the best basketball team at South River? What year was that?
Speaker 1:91-92. 91-92. Okay, tell us about that team. Russell Tung, darren Hall. I don't have too much memory. Eamon Hick, seen at Game. Wing Shot Larry Gross, and we just had Russell on. Yes, so you're going with that team as the best that ever played at South River. Same wing shot Larry Gross, nice, and we just had Russell on yes. Yes, so you're going with that team as the best that ever played at South River yes. Now how do you compare this year's team? I would say equal par, equal par.
Speaker 5:But they haven't done it yet. They have not. Yeah, also, lucy Potomac. That was a heartbreaker. I had to come, yes.
Speaker 2:Yes, it is. What did you think about being here tonight?
Speaker 6:Because we're privileged to be here tonight.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 3:Yeah, thanks.
Speaker 2:What do you think going forward? How do you think we're going to do tonight against everyone? We're going to kick their butts. I love it. You heard it from Craig.
Speaker 1:You heard it here first. That's right.
Speaker 5:Craig, what is your favorite memory here at South when Evan Hicks did the game, when he shot against Glenn Burney?
Speaker 2:You know Craig. I used to watch him, in the coldest of weathers, walk up and down the football field and he was like Kenny Dunn's right-handed as soon as we'd get done he'd be right here in the gym. He was at every one of our basketball games. He would put the mascot suit on. And I'm telling you, when you go to Safeway and you tell Craig, he'll come to you and he'll tell you everything that went wrong in that game.
Speaker 1:Here's what I appreciate about you, craig. Yeah, I don't know. I've seen you a lot. Every time I come in, I'm wearing a college or a high school. I appreciate that you give me the knowledge. I sometimes come in with Penn State, I sometimes come in with Virginia Tech, I come in with South River and you always got an interesting fact for me. That's what makes my day coming the safe way. Thank you Absolutely. Well, hey, I appreciate you coming here. Yes, let's go get a win. Yes, and then give me a prediction. Give me a prediction of the number of wins.
Speaker 9:This team will get by the end of the year.
Speaker 1:I think they finally get to 20. They get to 20. 20? You heard it, you heard it here 20, which makes us what we have to be 21-1. But does that put us as state champions? Yes, we have to win 20 games first, then the playoffs. The playoffs are a much different animal, all right. So you're saying a plus 20 season, right? Yes, yes, I love it. Thank you, sir.
Speaker 2:Let's go watch this game.
